|
|
|
Yahoo this week raised its level of email storage space, giving paid customers 2 GB of storage - double that of Google's beta Gmail service. Free users also got a boost to 100 MB, which is still just one-tenth of Gmail's.
The move to the 2-GB limit follows Google's announcement of Gmail -- which integrates the popular search engine with a Web-based e-mail service capped at 1 GB -- and a surprise move by rival Lycos to boost its own e-mail storage limit to 1 GB. Yahoo, often a leader in the portal space, has raised the bar a bit more this week with the new size limit, advising users to "send monster-sized files -- photos, presentations, whatever!"
"Keep more of the things that are important to you without worrying about bumping up against your storage limit," the company said.
While the stampede to bigger storage might not be able to continue climbing at its current rate, consumers and other users are gaining significant advantages without size and storage limits holding back use or overly obtrusive advertisements spoiling experience.
Competition for consumers will also increase demand for more advanced features and email capabilities. Yankee Group analyst Patrick Mahoney said, "Basically, what they're showing, by doubling what Google could offer in Gmail, they're sort of showing some muscle in a sense. They're saying, 'We're bigger and better.'" |

if they were like adventuremail and gave 2gb free (its virtually impossible to get email w/ adventuremail due to the MASS signups) then i would go to yahoo..but gmail tends to have a better, user-friendly interface and has alot more options in it. The only thing gmail has really been smart about is the 10mb file size limit to limit warez and music trading through their service (very good move due to warez and music trading being ILLEGAL and gmail could be liable for that if they allowed it to go on). I have always loved google and now they have email so im set! Im never giving up on google and gmail! _________________

I think MSN was pretty smart to wait til Yahoo! came out with it's upgrade before it did itself. so at least they get to be the in-between service. it knows it can't beat Google, but it doesn't want to be at the bottom either. after Yahoo! announced it's 100MB upgrade, they came out with 250MB. if Yahoo! were to upagrade again within the near future, that'd be the obvious reason...
I wonder if MSN's severs will crash when it rolls out the update. cause Yahoo!'s became unstable for around 2 days. took forever to load and sometimes it would show the old interface instead of the new and improved one... _________________

I think that it is pointless to pay for a service like Yahoo! If you're going to pay, why not buy hosting and a domain name? Then you can have something like "anythinguwant@whatever.com" or even... "loser@losersr.us" or anything (if the domain name is available)...
But since it's free, GMail is definately better than Yahoo! any day. _________________ Tom Joyce

Note, hosting is not really free. But you can often find someone else to pay for it |

Eck. It can be free for YOU...for instance, I have friends who pay for it. Heck, I even have people offer hosting to me all the time. "Hey Tom, will you code this for me? I'll give you hosting..." lol...I must have like 500000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000 GB saved up from all those offers... *note, that's a pretty big exaggeration* _________________ Tom Joyce

Well, I know that the master accounts of SBC Yahoo! DSL get 2 GB, but we also get free Launch radio streaming and stuff, than the normals do.
So that's pretty good for those people. They get what they pay for.
They should be sure to be careful of what people are uploading though. People use some free hosts for bad stuff, and the hosts never find out. _________________ I have Orkut, so if you need an invitation, don't hesitate to ask by giving me your First, Last Name, and your e-mail address.

why should someone pay or even think about paying for yahoo's 2G mailbox when he can get 1G for absolutely free!!
there isn't much difference between 1G and 2G. and about the 100MG free, it's nice but you still need to delete things, with gmail you dont need to erase anything, and if so only once i a while.
bottom line: gmail rocks yahoo sucks! |

| Yea.... we can get 100Gb free just by creating 100 accounts for free. For Yahoo 2GB is not free, right? What a shame!! |

Can't answer any better! Google has a wonderful service for the 2gb storage. Also, I find when Google send files, it's much quicker than Yahoo (basic Service) not sure about the 2GB service. |
