I've been trying to get my site listed in DMOZ for 3 years. I have given up. Although I have cleaned up the broken links and all, I still haven't got listed. My site is home-made, so I guess it isn't good enough, plus, it's hard to place in a single category because it is so eclectic.

Oh well, that's ok...I'm not mad at DMOZ. Many stand up, but few are chosen, and they have the right to decide. It would have been nice though. Maybe I'll try again in a couple of years. It's not as if they're going to drop off the Internet.

Well it seems so crazy of me to lambast an article in my second post, but it has some VERY glaring mistakes. OK here I go.
Quote:

1 - No Adult Sites

Sorry 100% wrong. DMOZ has a top level category called adult. This page has a PR of 8. http://dmoz.org/Adult/
Quote:

2 - No Gambling Sites

Again wrong. DMOZ has a very prominent category realted to gambling. http://dmoz.org/Games/Gambling/ There are at least 5 other gambling related categories.

Quote:
3 - No broken links

I am yet to find a mention of this in DMOZ guidelines. Obviously if your site has nothing but broken links you are in big trouble. But then yoy have other things to care about than DMOZ. If there are a few bnroken links, you can still get indexed.
Quote:
5 -You must post in the right category - that is essential.

It is very, very advised, but by no means essential. In fact less that one forth of sites which are added get submitted to correct category. As long as you make a good faith effort you should be ok. Check this http://resource-zone.com/forum/showthread.php?t=41558

Hello,

Yes, I like the article.

But remember, a Human Edited Directory is primarily a group of human minds - which vary, are instinctive and donot work mechanically along a beaten path.

So when thinking of DMOZ don't think like a programmer, computer or anything meachinical - as to get listed you are dealing with a human mind.

so have good content and good(non-broken)links and try the DMOZ thing and your sure to get traffic huh???

No, there is no guarantee of traffic. All that a DMOZ listing tells the SE's is that yours is a quality site.
I have known listed sites change their content and direction after inclusion and retain their placement, but only for a very short time.

that' the problem...too many DMOZ listing have poor quality sites...half of the mods are probably selling links to the public or has a a directory selling directory listing ...I know I reported a few of em..about 30 minutes into reporting them, those sites went down for about 48 hours..funny..

I think that whereas DMOZ does have an Adult section, I still feel that this in itself carries a risk http://www.buzzle.com/editorials/3-17-2005-67205.asp - But when I originally wrote that peice it was based on an editors comments who is in WPW with myself and personally I think wikipedia will replace DMOZ for those who are lucky enough to get their editors to place links to your site on your chosen subject. But thanks for all the replies.  David

Google should not put value into DMOZ anylonger..
it's a corrupt system! why ? I found this website
dedicated to selling websites that are selling DMOZ listings run by a few mods of them. reported them over the last couple years and each time I reported them, they pull the plug on the websites, goes dead for 24 hours or so and then comes back online..last time I reported that site was 6 months ago and could looked that site up if anyone is interested.
