I'm not a great fan of handheld game devices...they never seem to be up to the same standard as normal consoles. Although the size is a huge factor in this, the price which they have to market it for also plays an important part. The PSP and the Nintendo DS are probably the most advanced handheld gaming devices at this moment in time, and they both have fantastic features. The Nintendo has the touchscreen, and the PSP has excellent graphics power.
However, neither of them compare with the PS2 or xBox. In my opinion, people should take a break from constantly hammering away on game controllers. It's now possible to play game consoles wherever you are, at home, on the train, and in the car.
Here's an interesting review of the PSP from ciao.co.uk which includes comparisons against a few different types of portable devices, the Creative Zen, Apple iPod, and Nintendo DS
| Quote: |
PSP v Creative Zen Portable Media Centre
The PSP wins in terms of quality, but the Zen wins in terms of movies available. However, as time goes on the Entertainment industry will bring out more and more PSP compatible UMD disks, and, if they don't a worthy investment is a 512MB (or 1/2GB) memory stick duo (or pro duo), which can hold most movies comfortably. These retail at around £40. However there is the issue of the battery life. Although I do not own a Zen PMC I expect its battery life to be high (i.e. 8hrs) but the PSP's is surprisingly poor at 4½ hrs, although this is plenty to watch a movie or even 2, you would be lucky to get a reasonable amount of gaming in as well.
PSP v iPod
Obviously, the clear winner here is the iPod as it can hold much more than the PSP ever can (or probably even ever could as I doubt the sticks will ever reach 4GB (EDIT: OK, they will reach 4GB but they will be extremely expensive - around £400), let alone 20GB and the mighty 40GB), and the iPod is much more easy to navigate through without even lifting a finger (literally). However, with that extra memory stick the PSP is perfectly acceptable as a mp3 player (and I think a much fairer battle is PSP v iPod shuffle) to use for an hour or two daily, but you may want to buy a better pair of headphones than the ones that come with the value pack.
PSP v DS
The big one. In my (and a big emphasis on the my) opinion the PSP wins. Just like in my opinion the PS2 wins over the Gamecube. But the PSP and the DS are generally aimed at different people. Generally, (and here come the arguments) the DS is aimed at younger people (i.e. less than 12) and the PSP at older people (i.e. more than 14)(and the people age 13 can choose). The DS is much more versatile than the PSP and therefore more suitable than the PSP for the younger audiences. Then of course the games are the biggest issue here. Although the DS has the whole dual screen and touch screen stuff, I ask you this: what would you rather be playing in 2 months time? Mario 64 DS or GTA PSP? Crash Nitro Cart or Wipeout Pure? I think a pretty obvious decision. And the DS just could not release GTA DS simply because the majority of people who own the DS would not be allowed by law to buy it, and the graphics wouldn't be able to cope with it. That brings us swiftly to my next point: the graphics. The DS's graphics are close to the N64 and the PSP's are close to the PS2. That is just simply laughable. The PSP has much more features than the DS, and the games are just better (again, in my opinion). The PSP is the first competition Nintendo has ever really had, and now its here they're struggling. If it wasn't for the PSP Nintendo probably wouldn't have released the DS and just released some GBA SP KS crap, and then had a Mario version, a Zelda version and a pokémon version, just by sticking a different colour on it. The PSP is good for both competitions.
PSP Overview
The PSP has wi-fi (which is ideal for multiplayer games such as ridge-racer), great power, and with a leaked software update we now know it will be capable of web browsing (even though we can already do this with a copy of WipEout pure), word processing, spreadsheet making and processing complicated calculations, it is turning into a PDA and the entertainment system of the first half of the century. Also, if you have a look at the top of a PSP you will se to screw holes for attachments in between a USB style port; this could be for a camera, an IR remote, a SD card adapter or anything the mind come up with!
And those that think the battery life is too low, you should count yourself lucky. The earlier portable consoles battery life was the same and they couldn't recharge!
The PSP is simply put, a PS2, a iPod shuffle, a creative Zen, a PDA and a TV all in 1 pocket fitting device.(or the other way round) and soon-to-be mini computer with the web browsing, calculator, and even spreadsheet and word applications. And that's just on its first major update! Think what the future will bring. When I next go to the stores and have to choose between the DS, a iPod shuffle, Creative Zen PMC, and a PDA (at a total of £500+ with 4 pockets needed) or a PSP and memory stick (as little as £160 with 1 pocket needed), I know what I'll be choosing.

I think that The Sony PSP is a better handheld console than the Nintendo DS . It has heaps more features, but it comes at a very expensive price! At the end of the day, you get what you pay for. _________________

Yes, I agree, but pocket PCs are a hell of a lot more expensive than PSPs! _________________
