Labels are so much better. It is in both places, and you can have it automatically put the label want it to have on it.

Labels? Kind of, but I wish they acted more like folders. Instead of just labeling it in the inbox, they should be dragged inside the label. I usually just archive items after labeling them however.

You can set up filters that apply a label and archive emails.

The labels work just like folders only they have more flexibility. You can do everything with the Gmail labels that you can do with folders. With labels you can add multiple labels to a single message as an added bonus.

People just need to read more about the functionality of labels and filters.

Just start using them. You won't even know the difference. I archive my emails into "labels". As far as I am concerned, these are folders. And a email can be in more than one label (I mean folder Smile). It took me some time to understand the concept, but once I did, I loved it!!!

I will never go back to Yahoo or AOL. In fact, I cancelled my old AOL service a few months ago (once I got hooked to Gmail) & began saving that $14 a month (I know, what took me so long!).

I think Folders is the way to go. I don't like Labels. Google should get Folders going asap. It'd make my inbox look not to messed up (it does right now)

If you don't want your inbox to be messed up, why don't you just archive the messages? That way, the labelled messages won't show up in the inbox and it won't look cluttered. Or, if you prefer, just take off the labels.

The labels are the best for organising the emails and when applied with filters pretty much eliminate the need to put into folders and move your mail all around. I used my Gmail for the 1st 8 months and never touched the labels. I had no idea what they were and if they could be of any use. Now I find myself getting upset because other services or places don't have labels, but folders. A label can be applied to multiple emails and can be easily renamed, moved or deleted without affecting the email itself. The best example I can give is when I get an email from my "Sister" a filter I have created puts the label "Sister" to the email. If the email she sent is a computer question I apply the label "Computer Help". So under my labels If I click "Sister" I see all emails from or to my sister. If I click  the "Computer Question" label I see questions about computers and that same email is also under this label. If I wanted to take it a step further I could create a Label called "Open Issues" and " Closed Issues" and apply and remove the labels as I solve them. Opening that one email would show the following labels; Sister, Computer Help, Open Issues. A folder would never be able to come close to this function. For fun you could do a search for emails for 2005 and apply the label "2005 Emails"

The Labels in combination with the filters helps you pace yourself in you box. I have subscribed to CNN News. When the email arrives it automatically  gets the label "CNN" and then it is archived.  To the left where the labels are it reads CNN (Cool, meaning 8 unread messages from CNN. When I'm ready or have time to read them I just click on the label and there are all my emails from CNN with the 8 unread emails as well as previous emails. Anyone that really hasn't put the labels to use should try them and post on this board with any issues or questions.

Sorry to keep going on about them, but I want everyone to have the best and efficient use of their Gmail.

Yes, those are good examples.
I've got a feeling that most people that say they'd prefer folders
either don't know how to use labels, or don't know how to use them efficiently.
I think they're much more versatile and useful.

I prefer labels as I think it is easier to find messages & I also like how you can select "All Mail" in Gmail & view all your saved messages!

I like the idea of labels, I just keep forgetting to use them. I want to keep the files in the inbox until they are read but you have to do 2 archiving options rather than one. Add the label AND Archive the mail. It's hard to get the hang of for me.

The problem with the labels is that if you forget to label an email before archiving it, it will be too difficult to find it in your archive folder. The search does not work always and just imagine 10 years of emails are inside your archive folder and most of them have the search keywords inside. I think labels are great but when they are combined with the folders. As we can see, gmail creators could not ignore folders completely; they created six folders even before they create the labels. Folders are: "Inbox", "Chats", "Sent mails", "drafts", "All mail", "Spam" and "trash".

As an example of email sorting, just think of a bookshelf, each book has a name and they are sorted with the labels, from a to z, and finally they are inside different shelves.

As I said before, I believe that it will be much easier for anybody to sort years of emails with combination of labels and folders.

Well, I've never had a search 'not work' within Gmail.
My own feeling is that if I can't remember enough about a mail to find it
in a search, I probably don't need to be aware of its existence.

I'm also really glad that my computer isn't like a bookshelf, and that things on my hard-drive
don't need to be in alphabetical order (or even in the right place), in order for me to find them.

That's the way I regard my mail account. Besides, I wouldn't bother
applying a label and putting things away in a folder. That's just more work.
I can apply labels automatically to incoming mail, and still read them
in my inbox without having to check a bunch of different folders.
But that's just me.

It's okay for you to want folders. But not everyone does.
