Yes, that's what's commonly called a web beacon.
Opening mail generally is an action on the part of recipients.
Except for a few exceptions.
Spammers love email clients that are configured to automatically open mail
in the preview pane, and in HTML, like so many poor bewildered OE users have. _________________

They send HTML mail with picture, if you open mail, picture automatically downloads from their server and they know your mail account is active.
That's why it is good to disable pictures to download automatically, I know yahoo mail has that option, not sure about gmail. |
Yeah, Gmail has that option as well. A picture inside en e-mail is not showed (by default) unless the user tells Gmail to show it. If the sender of the e-mail is someone whom you trust, then you can choose the "always show pictures from this e-mail address" option. _________________

I use gmail only as POP3 mail, so I don't know all the options, but it is good is has that option.
I use both yahoo and gmail, in my experience gmail filter works better. |

But most of the people use Windows and Outlook express. Also, in Yahoo mail HTML pictures opens automatically. No action needed from the recipient.
The best is not opening suspicious message, but delete immediately. |

Er... what do you mean? You used "but" at the start of the sentence, but nothing in that sentence contradicts what mondine said. _________________

Oh, it's just a matter of phrasing, that's not really important.
Does the user actually have to "do" something to validate their address for spammers?
My point was that opening a mail is doing something.
The point Protos was making is that for the many users of Microsoft/Outlook Express
in a default configuration, (as well as other badly-configured mail readers)
it's the program itself that executes the action.
(So, in that case, it's the inaction of the user to configure their client properly that causes the damage.)
There's no real disagreement in fact. _________________

Well, that was precisely why I got confused. As I said, the word "but" has been used, but there's no disagreement. I suppose it has been phrased badly, as you said (no offence, Protos). Oh, and I read the whole discussion, Protos. _________________

I am getting sick of the +20 spam/day, there are many trends in the way the message is formatted. From my understanding there is no system set up to detect a similar type of email or same IP address location to skip my account altogether. Its good that it doesn't land in the Inbox but I still have to sift through the Spam box just incase one lands there that isn't meant to.

Well... gmail was bound to get hit by spammers eventually...
Hopefully the geniuses over there can quickly find a way to prevent it!
In the mean time I don't mind having to check my spam folder every once in awhile for legit email. _________________ ---

I've always had a bunch of spam (50+ daily) although it ALWAYS gets dumped in the right place. I give it a quick glance but so far nothing that shouldn't have has ever gone in the Spam folder. I've probably had about 4 spam emails that arrived in my Inbox since I've used my gmail account... which is from about a month after it started. |

I don't mind a spam folder filling up with crap. Like some of you I will give it a quick glance every couple of days just to make sure one of my friends hasn't been tagged as spam, then I hit the dump button.
However in the last couple of days I've noticed 3 or 4 spam messages *IN MY INBOX*. Always with stupid "rewards giveaways" or "Quick M3DS" names and the preview line just shows random characters.
I'm not opening them, for the reasons some of you have outlined above (web beacons etc.) but I'm getting increasingly annoyed. I like to keep a tidy inbox and this spam is driving me nuts in an obssesive compulsive sort of way!
I often read the Google Operating System blog (which I recommend) and came accross this post:
http://googlesystem.blogspot.com/2006/08/create-email-blacklist-in-gmail.html
which creates a blacklist using the filter options. It seems to be working for now.
I guess one has to concede that spam and spammers, and ISPs and email operators are engaged in an ever esculating arms race. It looks like the spammers are getting the upper hand at the moment... _________________ I want to meet someone with less hip and more hooray
