Is it just me, or has there been a mass influx of spam the last week or two??  No link that I can see to anything, and nothing I can identify that will allow me to create a filter to stop it.  But there certainly has been a lot of it.

Oh, and get this. My welcome to this community message; the one that contains the link so your membership is activated???  That message went to my Spam Folder!

Welcome, irar! I'm glad you found the message in your Spam folder. Yes, I've experienced an influx of spam. I don't know what's behind it, though, and don't really have time to research it myself.

Well, as long as it's just not me, I guess someone at Google somewhere must be looking into it.  I am sure there have been enough complaints  : >)

WOW, I thought I had given out my email address to the wrong site or surfed one too many. YES, me too!!! This week my spam & in boxes were full of crap! The reason I love Gmail was that very little (if any) Spam ever got into my inbox (& few to the Spam box). But this week started to give me flash backs from AOL & Yahoo! I pray to the Google's gods that they are not going to give our addresses to spammers for profit! If so, thier product & business model will never catch on.

You all seem to be hard hit by the virus "Spam", infact its species- "E-mail Spam", but as you must be informed that this is not the only one type of spam being experienced. There is one another type of spam creating mass agitation in the online community - "Search Engine Spam". Technically, termed as "Spamdexing".

A lot of research is being done on this topic and numerous webmasters have created hue-n-cry about the same. Like you people, I am a victim of "Spamdexing". Same as find crap in e-mails, I was gifted with crap in search results by the search engines. I came across a site http://www.organicspam.com , delivering an immense amount of information and facts about spam and spamming.

I have joined this site as an active member, to raise my voice against the deadly devil. This site is infact a virtual treasure trove of the information on the topic. If you people are affected, come to join hands with the like minded people.

I receive spam in my gmail account, even if I never use it to register to any site. I only use it to communicate with a few friends.
I don't know how spammers know my email?

There are a lot of spammers that use automated address generating software.
Sometimes called a 'dictionary, or 'phone book' program, these will
just churn through every possible permutation of common names.

I can compare two accounts that I have, neither of which has had any exposure.
One is named with two initials and a rather common name, and gets a ton of spam.

The other is a series of random letters and numbers, and hasn't seen a spam, yet.

My username is not some word from dictionary, and still I receive spam. They maybe have some way to recognise if mail address is active or not.

A good portion of the addresses that spam gets sent to aren't real, or active.
They don't care, sending out a wide net to catch a few fish.

There are ways that spammers can confirm an active address, but that
generally requires that the recipient does something.

Like use the address for a bogus 'sign-up', click an "unsubscribe" link in a spam mail,
or just open a spam mail that employes a web beacon.

Once an address is verified in this way, it will be resold over and over to other spammers.

Good idea!
I had about 1 or 2 messages a day in spam but now that has risen to about 5 or 6 a day. It is quite annoying, though the g-mail sam filter is still very good.

Um, spammers don't read mail that is sent to the 'reply' address.
In the odd chance that the 'from' address isn't faked, or stolen from an innocent party;
any reply to spam is just saying "you've reached a valid address. Please sell it to other spammers".

If it isn't to trace it, in order to report it, spam should just be discarded, unopened.

Spammers dont need action from you to know if your address is active. It is enough to open spam mail.
They send HTML mail with picture, if you open mail, picture automatically downloads from their server and they know your mail account is active.
That's why it is good to disable pictures to download automatically, I know yahoo mail has that option, not sure about gmail.
