I have tried raising awareness about this as of late because I'm concerned that Google's email system is sending me emails that are intended for another recipient. Though I have not in any way intruded in the emails I have recieved, I have to note that I have gained unintended (and therefore illicit) access to personal accounts and profiles that have me largely worried at the prospect of my own emails suffering the same fate. This is due to emails being sent to my Gmail address, destined for another person, with personal information (concerning purchases, addresses and the like) that I have been able to verify as non-spam: for example, I recieved notice from

AutoAnything.com of a purchase to a certain individual, and I was able to retrieve the password associated with that account on AutoAnything as well as view personal information included in the email. I do not know if this is a problem on the part of AutoAnything, but I have noticed that I have recieved several emails that were not destined for me and were not spam in nature. Additionally, I used to recieve password reset confirmation emails (ie. click the link in the email to set a new password) from Gmail for other Gmail addresses that I did not own.

Though I must stress that I have taken the utmost care not to interfere in any way with the information I have obtained (I have deleted all emails that contained personal information), I must say it worries me deeply. Has anyone suffered the same?

Don't panic.
There are a few possibilities of what is probably going on.
First, you could possibly get mail from one source in which someone has made a typo
in their cantact information. It happens, probably more often than you think.
There are also people that just pick an address at random to use for a service.
For over a year, I was receiving replies to e-cards being sent by some bonehead,
until I finally got them to remove my address from his account.

Now, the second possibility is 'sophisticated' spam.
It's a very common spammer tactic to disguise spam as a transaction receipt, or other
important business. Often, these are nothing more than probes looking for any
reply to confirm a valid address to spam, and sell to other spammers.

Since Gmail does not show the originating IP, it is easy for spammers to spoof their identities, and can
even provide links to their own site whch is an exact image of the real one.

A lot of spam from many sources will also have one name (not yours) in the "To" field,
and hide a long list of names in the "Blind Carbon Copy" field, including yours.

Okay, with all that said, you may still be uneasy.
As you may have noticed, Gmail makes you look long and hard to ty and find
the right form to submit a comment, question, or issue.

The one that seems to be the closest for your situation may be this one.
Fill it out with a descriptive note, and perhaps the headers of a couple of the questionable mails.
Keep a couple on hand, in case they ask you to forward a sample or two.

So, then, you've done what you can.
In the future, I'd advise simply deleting, unopened, any mail that isn't addressed to you.
You might even set up a filter to send these straight to the trash, if your name isn't in the "To" field.

Thank you mondine for your exhaustive reply. More probably than not it's the first case you mentioned (ie someone picking my email at random or by mistake) but it still is rather strange to get a transaction report from a perfectly reputable website with credentials to match?
