the IM service would be awesome. It should be better than msn, yahoo, icq, aim, trillian, and paltalk COMBINED. should be easily skinnable and be just the best IM service out there!

There's a pretty big inconsistency in there...trillian isn't an full instant messenger...Trillian does not have code, nor run a server. They only have constructed an application to help with our "problem." It is an application that allows you to use multiple sessions on AOL Instant Messenger, ICQ Instant Messenger, MSN Instant Messenger, Yahoo! Instant Messenger, and Internet Relay Chat.

I see no HARM in Google having it, but I think it is pointless for Google to create an instant messenger, especially under the name Gmail Instant Messenger. If anything, it should be Google Instant Messenger.

No,

It would just give criminals another place to look for kids/teens to chat to.

At the start of the America Online instant messanger, it was great, everyone was kind to each other, but now, since the chat, and bot communicators have emerged, there are no real people on that service.

Just try looking at the Member Directory. AOL has been trying to stop automatic signups, but it's still happening. If you were to search for someone with your intrests, all you would get is a list like this:

fhgffhotgirl
sdfhghotgirl
ggjdfhotgirl

We do NOT need Google to become one of these types of services. AOL anD ICQ already has that, and it should not be repeated by our favourite service. It's just going to get programmers all hyped up, and make it a bot infested community.

Sure, why not. I'm sure it'd be popular. I wouldn't be crushed or anything if it doesn't happen. If it happens cool, if not oh well, no biggie.

I think google could do a good job with a universal messenger. Like Trillian, but without the crap smileys. A universal messenger with the original smileys from MSN. w00t.

Hmm, well, wouldn't they have to pay to use their smilies? Why not come up with their own version? It would be less struggle for them.

Personally, while I do use MSN just because all my friends use it. I think it's probably a lot better when your just hanging about in IRC, as long as you are just chilling out on a room that you know people in.

i use yahoo and msn just because those are the 2 that my gaming clan uses.

Every clan I've been in, we've always used IRC just as a place where you could meet before a war and then chill out in after. Sort of like a sports club where you'd meet, shake hands, and then have a few drinks afterwards.

After Gmail, if a poll like this referring to an email service run by Google (without knowing the new different options and characteristics) should sound strange.
Now we have Gmail, although still in a beta phase. And we see (well, you see, I still don't have account Wink ) that it's something good and has removed the quiet waters of email accounts.

So, why not a new GMessenger?

I agree, this would just add to the jumble of IM programs already out there. Besides there aren't many truley innovative fetures they could add. The main point of instant messaging is simplicity. Its meant to be natural.

YES if any google authority is listening, MAKE A GOOGLE INSTANT MESSENGER. i promise it will be a hit. what if it looked really cool and everything. what if there was no adds and it was super fast and there are all these extra features that msn messenger doesn't have. although msn messenger has tons of stuff, google has the ability to outdo microsoft. if they invested some money into it, i bet it will be an instant success. they could even advertise it on their main search engine, kind of like their googlebar.

It might be, because AOL Instant Messenger is already a big hit, and people might not be willing to switch to Google.
