I have fondled with SEO for couple months now and my gut-feeling is this:
Create your site by following ideals of the original Internet: - Sharing relevant and correct information - Concentrate on usability - Maintain your site regulary - Use 'that-so-often-forgotten' common sense
These are the main points that have formed after reading dozens of 'tips&tricks' and articles about search engine optimization. Sadly, most of the time, sites like these get trampled in search results by sites that use dubious optimization methods. But easy and fast is not the way.
Linking is powerful, and I think the most precious links are the ones you collect without excessive promotion.
So patience nad you get there... as boring as that may sound
You add an extension to firefox... it was called SEOTools i think or you can check the PR in http://seopen.com/seopen-tools/pagerank.php
You should notice that many who are in the business say that PR is pretty useless. So don't stare at it, just concentrate acquiring links from relevant sites.
