I've been looking at buying text link ads. Does Google have a way to find out if you're purchasing text links rather than getting them naturally?

They see you when you're sleeping.
They know when you're awake.
Actually, they do keep a pretty close eye on that sort of thing. They are, after all, a giant information machine.
And if they even think you're creating 'artificial' links, the consequences can be long and unpleasant.
I'd try to find a different way.

Buy them little by little and from sites that are your 'theme'. So if you are selling computers, the link in the pages of the local zoo is suspicious.
Sometimes buying links is the only way to breach the barrier of visibility, so people can start finding your site.
Just make really really REALLY sure that you deserve that attention, or else, like mondine said, the slap in the wrist will propably break it...
