"Google has begun to roll out "e-mail portability" to its Gmail accounts, which enables users to download and send messages over POP3 using any external e-mail client. The added feature is the latest move by Google to ramp up its free service and better compete with giants Yahoo! and Microsoft. Gmail's initial offer of massive storage space was soon matched by its e-mail rivals, but Yahoo! currently charges for POP3 access and MSN recently abandoned the feature due to abuse. E-mail portability is expected to be available to all Gmail users within two weeks."

Hi everyone. I just set my account to receive email via pop connection. I'm having troble getting my account to send mail though. I have no problems receiveing email through Outlook XP, but when it try's to send anything it has been fialing. I've checked and doule check the configuation stuff via Gmails help page. Is anyone else having any issues sending email through your pop accounts?

I haven't tried sending with Gmail, but I know that some ISPs block using third-party mail senders. For example, I once had a cable broadband connection and the ISP blocked using any servers for outgoing mail other than its own. In this case you can simply use your ISP's outgoing mailserver and enter your Gmail address as the sender.

Maybe, but this mainly concerns POP3 mail clients on desktops.

Well, you do know that Gmail never said anything about offering SMTP to users, right? So that maybe the problem, because without SMTP access, you will not be able to send mail with E-mail clients...

If you really wanted to, I guess you could just host your own SMTP server Smile There are free clients and such to do this with Smile Or use your ISP's...

Exactly, but it won't have the same digital signature on your email as the one of Gmail. For example the originating IP will be different and many other things...though it doesn't really matter, and even if I don't have a certain gmail address, like billgates@gmail.com, its very easy to forge an email with that address but you can't change the originating IP...
