What would you all like to see improved in this service?

Personally, I'd like to see something similar to Orkut's invite system. There's been a lot of complaints of people getting at least 50 of their invites stolen from people typing in random numbers to generate a invite.

In Orkut, they ask for the e-mailed entered so they can verify that it's YOUR code. That helps prevent people from trying to get invites to their community without asking someone.

I'd also like to see more options of customizing your message, like the kind of thing you would see on a message board.

Anyone else agree, or disagree, or just want to comment on the subject?

At the moment, you can only have labels.

What I do, is I put the labels on all my e-mail and then I archive them to get them out of the inbox.

I like the fact that it refreshes everytime you get a new e-mail. That's one thing that Yahoo! doesn't have, which totally rocks my socks off.

I was just gonna create a thread like this last time I came around. didn't have enough time though, hehe... cuz had to go somewhere. thanks for putting this up, Jessica... and welcome to the boards!

I was thinking we could all brainstorm suggestions and improvements and then compile a list we could send to the Gmail Team.

here are a few of mine:

HTML/text toolbar - this is one feature I almost need. for my friends who don't have Gmail, they have a real hard time going through overly threaded messages because the message headers (between replies) aren't put in bold. I'm forced to delete all previous emails other than the one I'm replying to.

calendar - a nifty feature that many people, including me, have been asking for.

improved contacts - I personally don't need a full-featured address book, but lots of people have been clamoring for something as rich as Yahoo! Mail's. maybe they could add fields for phone numbers, postal addresses and birthdays (that would be syncronized with the calendar - something Yahoo! hasn't even thought of)

downloadable Gmail app - instead of enabling free POP3 access, I hope Gmail could release an application almost entirely similar to the web version, except it would be accessed directly from your desktop, running as an application. it would be so much better for both us and Gmail, firstly because we could continue to take advantage of Gmail's clean-cut, fast and user-friendly interface (and Conversation, Star and Label features). secondly, we would be able to keep the 1GB storage advantage. typical POP3 access would downlaod everything into your PC, which ultimately defeats the point of having the massive space. lastly, Gmail wins because it can continue to serve it's text ads. they wouldn't be able to do that if we were all using Outlook Express.

that's all I've got for now. hehe...

If Gmail isn't going POP3 I would like them to integrate some sort of virus scan, besides just bblocking executables, because sometimes I want someone to send me an executable.

Thanks absent-minded!

Yes, I would like a virus scanner too. It would help people to not recieve "this is for you" e-mails.

The program would be good aswell, and maybe they could tranfer e-mails to a mobile aswell?

A calender is nice too. I know I always use them myself.

Now I should get out of here till tomorrow, I'm falling asleep typing this!

oh yeah... nice idea on the virus scan, picknslap. haha... forgot all about it cause I haven't used the attachment feature on Gmail yet. there are way too many viruses on the internet now. almost all target Windows...

I think Gmail should work on HTML-enabled mobiles once they release the HTML version. the current web version of Gmail runs on Java, I think... which is why it doesn't work with many older browsers and such. although I hope that once they release the HTML version, we should be given the option to choose. I love the Java version for checking on the PC...

We won't have both labels and folders. Labels are the ultimate replacement for folders - pretty much identical in function, but you can put more than one label on a single message.

I guess I could put this in here as well:

http://gmailfeatures.grytoyr.net/

enter your email to get a vote link. once you get the email, click on it and it'll take you to the voting page. choose your 5 most wanted Gmail improvements/additions in order of priority. hopefully, as more and more people go there and vote, the Gmail Team will come across the site and use it to get feedback as well.

btw, only people with valid Gmail addresses will be given the chance to vote. it's so that this thing doesn't get spammed and results come from valid beta testers....

I think mass e-mailing is also important--it's a feature that's integrated into Yahoo pretty well.

we'll try ability to send messages with HTML
done! signatures on outgoing messages
we'll try POP3 access
working on it plain HTML version of Gmail
working on it automatic msg forwarding
done! safari compatibility
we'll try ability to save a draft

I saw this in the gmail help pages regarding attachments. hope this clarifies:

Quote:
That depends on the attachment. With Gmail, you can send and receive messages up to 10 megabytes (MB) in size.

When you add an attachment, the size of a file may increase because transport encodings (the information that allows your message to be safely sent and read) are automatically added.

This means that in some cases, attachments that are 6 to 10MB in size may push the total message size above 10MB. When this happens, Gmail displays a warning that your message exceeds the 10MB limit.

then there is every justification that gmail increases the limit. Smile
