| There are far less privacy issues with Gmail than with competing services from Yahoo and MSN (Hotmail). These companies sell addresses, send advertisements to users, and collect more personal information during sign-up than Google does. Yet Google gets all the crap over its AdSense technology which is no more invasive on Gmail.com than it is on the hundreds of thousands of webpages it's already used on. It's no more "reading" your mail than Hotmail's spam filters is. |

It's only simple regexing. AdSense doesn't bother me a bit, and I'd much rather see something that has something to do with my message than some ad telling me to send a sensual IM to a random woman.
If I ever need to send a secure message, I know that the only way to prevent a third party from easily reading it is to encrypt it, whether I'm using Hotmail, Yahoo, or GMail. |

I don't have any concerns, cause they dont have any ads.. So it makes it less likely they will sell your personal information.

| Google Gmail actually *does* have ads. They're text ads that appear when you view a message - very unobtrusive on the right side. |

I have no concerns and no one should. gmail is perfectly OK. Its not like there's people reading you mail, its a computer scaning you email for words so they can put relavent ads. important to mention that the ads are never ralevent, maybe if they could give you ads by sentences they would be relavent.
Another things is that the ads are small and they are on the side. in yahoo's email service the ads are BIG and they are puting then righ in the face.
so no one should worry. they are not doing it to find funny massages and laugh at us, they are doing this in order to give us big cosy email boxs.
and in reply to Zain: they dont have any personal information about you, the ads are based on words they find in the ads you write and recieve. |

I think all the fuss about gmail's privacy issue's is a bunch of bull .. the ads are computer generated and no one reads your mail so what's there to worry about ?
one thing though, i've read some where that there is a US law that states that after a certain amount of time emails kept on the server are no longer private and are the property of the server...
and in a service like gmail emails are kept for a long time on the server ..
does anyone have any idea what am i talking about ?
i'd like more info on that ..
and of course we can always use PGP .. |

yes, i fully agree with mzruya. the ads evidently aren't the issues here. they are completely innocuous and quite tolerable compared to other ads imposed by other email providers.
however, i think the main issue here is their controversial privacy policy...the website http://www.gmail-is-too-creepy.com/ completely bashes gmail and its policies and has an extensive list and evidence of their stand. as for me personally, i am neutral but hesitant of google and its privacy policy...as the saying goes, it's too good to be true. i think basically what that website is trying to convey is that google does not automatically delete your messages permanently, as Yahoo! does, but keeps them on record and file and will possibly hand over your private personal emails to international officials if needed. or something like that...
does anyone have a say about this? |

I have no problem with Gmail storing my email on their servers for a certain period of time after me deleting them. I personally have nothing confidential to hide, and even though my mail is personal, I doubt anyone at Gmail would actually care to open it up and read - given the fact that they have the power to do so, which I totally doubt is the case. I believe Yahoo! and Hotmail also keep users' emails on their servers after deletion until they are overwritten by newer messages. and, anyone with highly confidential information should and would be smart enough to not use free email services like these. I don't see the FBI or CIA signing up for Gmail accounts anytime soon... _________________

I think if you are worried about privacy issues, you shouldn't use the internet. You use it knowing that your info is "out there" with the possibility of someone/something accessing it.

I haven't got any spam e-mails yet, so I'm not too worried about it. It's when third party e-mails start coming in that I will. _________________ I have Orkut, so if you need an invitation, don't hesitate to ask by giving me your First, Last Name, and your e-mail address.

Because Google owns it, I have no problems with releasing my personal information to any of the companies owned by Google.
Security concerns are non-existant with a company that time and time again never fails to provide safe information policies. |
