|
|
|
So it's official, we'll be getting 250 megs. Surprise, they won't match up to Google's gig.
Excerpt:
| Quote: |
We're rolling out email antivirus protection as well as enhanced storage to help meet your growing needs. This will make MSN Hotmail, a world class email service that both scans and cleans ingoing and outgoing email for viruses and worms before they enter your inbox.
In addition to delivering world-class antivirus protection, you can also look forward to an upgrade in your storage capacity. In fact, you'll receive 125 times your current email storage with the introduction of a 250 MB inbox as well as the ability to send attachments up to 10 MB.
|
However, they make it sound like an afterthought - as if people actually want antivirus protection more than additional mailspace. It's simply not true. I have a mere 45 messages in my Hotmail account, and it's 89% filled! It can only take a couple more. |

Like they could, with all that bandwidth being spent on all of those big graphic advertisements and spyware downloads--which will probably do nothing but increase. _________________ Tetris | Great Big Blog |

Yes, but Yahoo gives 100 megs. So, Hotmail offers more than that, and this is what matters for them. They know competing with Gmail is going to be difficult, and they're trying to make a difference with a "similar" service like theirs.
And many newbie users of Messenger don't know they don't need to have a Hotmail account but any other, that way they grow their number of accounts despite the amount of megs. offered... |

hahaha! yeah... that was what I was about to say as well. hehe... I hate Hotmail's user interface. It's so slow, user-unfriendly, extremely messy and not nice enough to be worth the loading or the bandwidth.

I use MSN Messenger with a Hotmail account and I never got an email about the 250MB upgrade. maybe they found out I already got Gmail. hehehe... too bad. even with 250MB, I'm not gonna be switching back to Hotmail - yahoo!'s actually not too bad... _________________

They're still trying to do stuff 1/4 as good as Google. First a new search engine sort of resembling Google, now 1/4 the size of Gmail account emails.... _________________ Tetris | Great Big Blog |

Yes, nothing will be able to compare with 1 gig of free space. No company has or will in the near future be able to put up anything to that extent.
Google releases GMail a while back, announcing a 1 gig amount of space. People start clammoring for an account.
Yahoo realizes this and combats it with the name. Still being able to grant favor in their customers' eyes, they announce 200 megs.
Hotmail finally catches up with the trend and releases word about a 250 megs.
Will the competition for free space keep driving the major e-mail service providers up, up, and up? The sky's the limit! |

Well, I wouldn't like the sky to be the limit, there's plenty of space above it
This is something very interesting for us "customers": if companies compete we can get more from all of them |

Indeed. The various companies that are in the buisness now will probably start competing for this, too. After all, it's pretty much about the name rather than how much you can make with a free service to people.
Overall, I think Hotmail is doing the best, aside from GMail. |

Imagine the situation: Gmail doesn't exist (of course, we wouldn't be in here ).
Then, as it was before Gmail appeared, Yahoo email accounts would contain 10 megs. each and Hotmail ones 2 megs. (I can't remember the limit now, but I think I'm right). So, what happened? Somebody threw a stone into the pond, the waters started moving, and we're getting advantage from that movement. Fortunately
I hope all this movement lead to an improvement in the services (the sooner the better for us customers ). |

either way, it's a win-win situation for the customer
i'm glad google introduced their gmail service and started the whole exclusive gmail invitation fad. not only do they offer excellent features as well as integrating their famous, fast search engine function but they also offer something never offered freely before: 1 gigabyte of email storage. with such growing popularity, of course the competitors inevitably cannot help but to take notice and consequently have to do something to retain users from running to gmail. so they 'up' their meager email storage by the hundred haha. yahoo! quickly offers 96 more mb of storage and hotmail, i guess, reluctantly follows suit as well. haha hotmail got worried
yahoo! actually isn't all that bad...but hotmail simply sucks gmail all the way! |

| I've been a fan of MSN and I've been using Hotmail FOREVER... But now the only reason I use MSN is because I'm stuck with dialup... And Hotmail was the only free email client I knew about... I like the upgrade to 250 mb by Hotmail though, it probably got desperate after the (beta) release of Gmail, which it should.. I'm not sure if anyone will be going (back) to Hotmail anymore after the final release is released (o_O). |

| more than the space, it is the innovations that attract me. see the threading concept, leble concepts, and of course space to keep them all together. Google being a search company, will also ensure that gmail loads faster. |

gmail is far more innovative and legit compared to msn and yahoo. Gmail is of course derrived from google which is by far the best in search engine technology. Gmail is the easiest and most user friendly email service around. Of course there are several other free 1-3gb mail services but to tell you the truth....they such...and its a pain in the a-- to get an account...for example, ADVENTURE MAIL. You try to sign up but before you know it their 10,000 user quota is filled. So i would just reccomend sticking to gmail and hoping for an invite if you dont have gmail already. _________________
