Google Groups 2 Beta was launched around May 12.
It features mailing list support and allows users to create their own mailing lists, just like Yahoo Groups.
The site's URL is GoogleGroups.com; compare to YahooGroups.com.
Google's description:
| Quote: |
* Group creation: Users can easily create, join, and search email-based mailing lists; administrative interface enables customized access controls to designate a group as public or restricted
* Dynamic conversations: Postings appear within 10 seconds and are indexed within 10 minutes
* Enhanced user interface: Users can track and mark favorite topics using the "My Groups" feature and view postings in a variety of ways including by message summary, title, or conversation view

| Yeah, I think they're trying to be more "sticky". Search, for example, isn't sticky - it's easy to switch to another provider. |

| Even though there's almost no ads there, it's features aren't as good as Yahoo! Groups... Google Groups need more improvements first... |

as of now, I think Google Groups v.2 beta's interface should be improved... it's a bit hard to navigate and quite messy... very un-Googlish. I'm looking forward to something more like Gmail's interface before I get it going with them... _________________

just went to visit the Google Groups 2 beta now and I noticed they added the Star feature - the same as the one they have on Gmail. nice touch, I guess, since Yahoo! groups doesn't seem to have this.
btw, it would be nice if they could provide a forum-like interface. this is one of the reasons I personally don't like using groups because it's hard to navigate around it and stuff... _________________

Yeah i agree with you. I does remind me of yahoo. And that is one thing they should not do. Try to keep away from yahoo as much as possible. They need create their own image if they want to be suscessful. One thing for sure is that they need to put more work into it. I expect it to since they are in beta mode. Otherwise i dont know. But i like the idea, like one person said, about getting groups in google. |

i think i'll wait for it to get out of the beta mode before i switch over to it. even then i'm not a big fan of groups. they just don't make much since to me. i'll just stick to my bulletin boards. oh well. i could always use the GC. |

I have been managing a mailing list (aka Group) for the last 6 years. I started in listbot, until Microsoft bought it, then we went to eGroups, but Yahoo! bought it and it became so slow, it rejected people, lost messages... so we went to elistas.net, a Spanish similar service, but it's becoming as messy as Yahoo! was.
GoogleGroups is great news for me. I have already registered our group there and I'm just waiting for a few changes to be implemented, specially Spanish language interface.
As an anecdote, just let me tell you, last week there wasn't "Delete this group" option. So I e-mailed them to ask them what should I do in case I didn't want the group any more? And I got a reply saying that was a good suggestion. Yesterday I saw the "Delete this group" link placed in the "Manage" section.
That's what's great about Google: users count!
