Windows XP uses 20% of your bandwidth !

Microsoft reserve 20% of your available bandwidth for their own purposes (suspect for updates and interrogating your machine etc..)

Here's how to get it back:

Click Start-->Run-->type "gpedit.msc" without the "

This opens the group policy editor. Then go to:

Local Computer Policy-->Computer Configuration-->Administrative Templates-->Network-->QOS Packet Scheduler-->Limit Reservable Bandwidth

Double click on Limit Reservable bandwidth. It will say it is not configured, but the truth is under the 'Explain' tab :

"By default, the Packet Scheduler limits the system to 20 percent of the bandwidth of a connection, but you can use this setting to override the default."

So the trick is to ENABLE reservable bandwidth, then set it to ZERO. This will allow the system to reserve nothing, rather than the default 20%.

Works on XP Pro and 2000.

Wink

thanks! I was wondering why my internet speed was so much slower in Windows. I just thought it was the bulky OS and such, but its actually reserved bandwidth. I've looked through those settings before but I never read the bottom of the explanation.

From Microsoft themselves:

"There have been claims in various published technical articles and newsgroup postings that Windows XP always reserves 20 percent of the available bandwidth for QoS. These claims are incorrect."
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q316666

Don't mess with your configs, registries, or hardware, etc. without looking into it first.

At first it was not configured. My speed was around 1.2 kbps.

When I enabled it and set it to zero, it sped up to around 1.5 kbps. I love it, thank you so much!

wow. I just did that and ran a bandwidth test and here's a "cut and paste" version of my results:

5 megabits per second

Communications 5 megabits per second
Storage 604.5 kilobytes per second
1MB file download 1.7 seconds
Subjective rating Awesome

Comparison:
-Cable in New York (avg. 2.84 Mbits/sec)
-T-1 (max. 1.54 Mbits/sec)

nice...nice...nice...

Dugg! Unfortunately I myself can't get this to work >_>
Mine freezes at the Admin Controls step. Oh well, guess I'll try it on my other computer.
