I don't see why it would be againast the terms because you aren't modifying GMail at all. You're just modifying the look of it using CSS in the local browser. You can even do it with IE.

heh, tripe post. Anyways, I looked at the GMail Tos real quick and it doesn't say anything about modifying the looks of it client side. I see something about modifying it in general but I believe that's server side. Plus it's not like Google will find out that you're modifying the style sheets on the local browser. If they did, they would then be considered spyware and you can sue their pants off.

Doing what the first post in this thread said is against Gmail's TOS.

That's a disadvantage to the people whom have trouble seeing certain stuff then. You'd think Google would be smart about this since it doesn't do any harm. I would still find it hard to believe Google would even find out you're modifying a style sheet to benefit your self.

Well, it's currently on Google's little list of improvements. Best thing to do is wait or get CSSified.

To modify the CSS of gmail, wouldn't you need access to the actual google CSS file before you could do anything? Even if you use an external CSS file, you'd still need a way of integrating it into the gmail HTML and I can't think of a way besides modifying the files.

No, it's a matterof just telling your browser to use a default CSS file located on your system to modify the look of any web page. I find it useful on ugly websites.

Both client-side and server-side modifications are counted as violations of the GMail Terms Of Service, so yeah, Randy is correct.
That means GMail skinning, GMail FS and all those other fancy augmentation programs are strictly prohibited. I'm sure Google won't in most cases, but there is chance for them to close down your account.

But, I don't see any possible way for them to track down the CSS modifications, as the HTML files are changed only after they are downloaded. The CSS files are switched at that time as well, so...I guess it is safe.

Would be nice to see a nice UI for Gmail. It is so plan and dull looking to the eye.

IF anyone saw the Yahoo! Beta mail UI, people would be flocking to it because of looks and not space and speed.

I hope GMAIL updates their interface to something more elegant rather than a basic design.

I tried the Gmail skin not long ago and wasn't impressed with it. There were miscellaneous items left unskinned making quite the clash with colors. The idea is great just not mature enough to be stable.

Regarding wheter it is legit: Yes, absolutely, it is very legit. Browsers have provided the ability to use your own styles for accessibility reasons dating back to many years ago. Little used but none the less still available. Google (and any website owner) is powerless to prevent you from using your own custom styles. I would even doubt google has the ability to know if you are using a custom style sheet. If they did I'd bet my grandma's toombstone that they would not give a rat's a--.

Just my opinion anyways. Smile
