If we exclude Lord of the Rings, which created the genre, what would you pick as the best Fantasy Epic of all time? My vote goes to the Song of Ice and Fire series by George R. R. Martin, whose first book is A Game of Thrones. It has great story lines, fascinating characters, and complete unpredictabilty. Book 4 is coming out next month and I can't wait.
What's your favorite?

My favourite fantasy books are the books in the Inheritance Trilogy, written by Christopher Paolini. The Harry Potter Septology probably comes second.
P.S. I'm saying "probably" because there are the Bartimaeus Trilogy and also the Artemis Fowl series. _________________

Uhmmm...the gods have main role in them, you really think they could be real?
Of course they're based on legends of real events...but that's the case with most of fantasy.
As for the question in the topic, I'd also probably say Bible - after all, most succesfull book in history. |

Actually, I think the Indian epic poems in Sanskrit, Ramayana and Mahabharata are older than any others.
And the shortform for Lord of The Rings is usually LoTR, not LoR.
Besides, there were several fantasy epics long before LoTR. Such as E.R. Eddings' The Worm Ouroboros. And Tolkien himself was inspired partly by Celtic mythology with its tales of fairies, elves, etc, and by European medieval fairy tales of dwarves, elves, trolls, and epic quests and battles for sacred objects of power, like King Arthur's legendary Quest for The Holy Grail, which possibly inspired the idea of the Quest for the One Ring. And of course the battles between armoured knights battling for Good and bestial hordes of dark-skinned savages representing Evil is a barely veiled analogy to the Crusades. |

Well Blake, yeah they could be older, but I wasn't talking about which was the oldest, I just said that they were much older than LotR.

Well since you didn't read it, why did you make that ignorant comment? And sorry, I don't mean any harm or offence, I just like to make my opinions clear, so I apologize if it sounds harsh, I don't want to come off as aggressive. And I was referring to your comment as ignorant, not you. |

You know, I feel that it shows something truly sad about state of the forums on which you must "protect" yourself like that... |
