Google India

Code:
President A P J Abdul Kalam has expressed concern over the security threat posed by Google Earth's free mapping program available on the internet.

Speaking at a top-level meeting in Hyderabad on Saturday, President Kalam voiced concern regarding "sensitive areas clearly marked on Google Earth". He asserted that terrorists and other subversive elements would use these images for their nefarious activities. Kalam also said that present laws are inadequate and that stringent laws are required to restrain the use of these pictures.

Reflecting concerns expressed by countries like South Korea, Thailand and Netherlands, Kalam expressed regret that some developing countries, already under the specter of terrorist attacks, have been chosen to provide high resolutions. As regards India, the Google site depicts among others, clear images of Army headquarters, Parliament House, Rashtrapati Bhavan and other defense establishments.

The Ministry of Science and Technology has apparently woken up to the alarm sounded off by President Kalam. Reportedly, the Ministry has started evaluating images of sensitive locations, in close conjunction with security agencies.

However, the defense arm of the government appears divided over this issue. Last month, the armed forces said that they had already factored into their plans, the threat of satellite imagery of their military bases, available freely on the Net.

Similarly according to sources, frontline IAF bases are said to have "adequate protection systems" in place, while satellite images of say "INS Viraat" berthed at Mumbai, do not make any difference, as ships are supposed to be "mobile platforms - here today... gone tomorrow".

Regulate what comes through on the keyboard through your fingers. That "dood" is the President of India.

And as for the actual thing which this topic is based on, I feel that India should try and stop Google from displaying these senitive areas. They can show the Rashtrapati Bhavan, and that's no problem, but army doings hardly fall in the same category. Those kind of things are supposed to be top-level secrets.

What do you think, pratik?

It is a great word: "extremely wicked" or villainous

I agree that some things are better left alone. Every country or person deserves a certain amount of privacy.
Unfortunately, the bad guys are sophisticated to the degree that they can gain intelligence no matter what.

How do you combat suicide bombers! Life is so cheap for some!

Didn't you mean regulate, instead of reagulate. Wink

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. I mean, WTF!? Reagulate, lmao.
Anyway, what is wrong with the President of India being a dude? He's a dude like you and me, so I don't see any error here. Unless ofcourse you're trying to hint he's something else, in which case I must say that you've been very naughty. Razz

Hehe, just kidding. Sorry if I offended you, just busting out a joke. Smile

Is it just India's top-secret areas which have been revealed? I've not heard anyone complain about Britain's or France's etc...

Aye, Captain!!!

Anywho, using Google Earth, I can see the Iraqi base where I was stationed(the images are quite old), I can see Area 51, and MANY MANY other locations that are secured areas.

Now, as a person with a Top Secret Security Clearance(no sh--) I feel that these images have no value for terrorism or other people who wish to do harm. The only thing remotely possible is that they can see the layout of the location. It should still be hardened, and secured at the perimeter. You ask about a meelee attack? Well, for common place methods like RPG's and mortars, they shouldn't be able to get that close anyway. For the ultra-expensive, remote missile commands and what not, that requires a whole different form of defense all together.

In conclusion, these images aren't harmful, and people should leave them be. The people who would liek them gone are the same people who think book.google.com is stealing from them!

No, you never offended me. I never said the the President of India wasn't a dude. I just said that he wasn't a "dood", or whatever that means ( Wink ). And by the way, I changed "reagulate" to "regulate". These small errors are quite common with me. I fear I'll have to start using that "Spell Check" feature and waste precious time. Sad

Okay, there are two ongoing threads, with essentially the same subject matter. If anone needs to keep flogging this horse, the can go to the "India Revealed" thread.
