i am using good old windows 98. not the second version. i want to upgrade majorly. when i got my computer i only had tops of 8 GB. and i still have that. i have so many glitches in my computer. my computer freezes every time i have 2 to 3 programs running at the same time. now i am waiting for vista to come out, not the beta version, but the final version. does anybody think that windows vista would be good investment or linux? and if linux then which one? p.s. : i don't know how to use linux at all. if there is a forum about only to linux, then could someone tell me. that would be appreciated. infact is there a forum for mac, linux, or any other special type of operating system separately designed for each of the operating system. i am just trying to learn about each system through other peoples intelligent conversation. well, reply to my message please. thanks! |

Beauwolf, actually Windows 98 was the most stable operating system Microsoft has created up to this day. And Albatross I purchased a bunch of computer parts, just waiting until they ship and until I'm done with the training so I can put it together. As far as the processor goes I'm getting the AMD 64 4000+ w/San Diego Core (Helps the memory allocation) I'm in the process of pirating Windows XP 64 Bit. I was wondering if it was really that much better... _________________ Sometimes I get the urge to run around naked....then I drink some windex and it keeps me from streaking. |

common puppynut5 you know that windows 98 is not the stable operating system Microsoft has created up to this day. the most stable system microsoft created was the business operating system a.k.a NT. but they (microsoft) incorporated NT into the Windows XP and now into the Windows Vista. so to say Windows 98 is the most stable, is the wrong thing you can say. i got so many error message every time i have 2 to 3 different software running. and not to mention loose my work when computer restart just because it freezes my computer . that is why i asked, which one is better to invest? the Linux, or the Windows Vista. i know that Windows Vista is not out there yet, but it will be the coolest thing out there once it is out. |

Once again, you've asked a new question, and tacked it onto the end of another thread.
You'd be a lot more likely to get useful responses if you didn't do this. _________________

mondine, now i do not know absolutely what you are talking about. next time you want to pinpoint my errors try to include details of my conversations and tell me what should happen and what should not happen. as you can tell i am terrible at this stuff. this is my first time doing this kind of stuff. i never wrote on the forum before. well, except may be on the Invitation forum to get the invitations, but other than that i don't usually do that. again give me exact details then i might understand and get a better picture in my mind as to what i am supposed to do and what i am not supposted to do.
and sorry i am off of the topic here. please excuse my errors.
thanks for understanding. |

Well, it's simple, really. This topic was a poll, asking what operating systems people use.
You're in the right forum (Gereral Computer), but instead of replying in this topic (thread), you should have clicked "New Topic", picked a descriptive subject line such as "What OS is right for me?" (or similar) and asked your question regarding Vista and Linux.
That way, this topic continues as before on the same subject, and people see your new topic, and can better help you.
Also, don't worry. Many people have difficulties when they first start using this type of forum. It just takes some getting used to. _________________

To answer your question...you don't risk much by trying some flavour of Linux. It's usually free after all. However since you have ancient computer this greatly complicates things. I would advise against trying Linux on your current machine - generally you need something that can run perfectly Windows 2000/XP/2003/Vista to enjoy modern distributions of Linux (there are distros that are not very resource hungry and quite capable...but they usually aren't very user friendly, and those who are don't have big community. And community support is crucial in your casesince you're a beginner). So...wait with trying Linux untill you'll upgrade. You could for example buy machine, try Linux first and if doesn't satisfy (unlikelly IMHO...since you probably don't game anyway) you, buy Windows.
When it comes to distrubution, my recommendation in most cases for some time is Ubuntu (search on Google, first link), for various reasons. Important ones in your case: totally free (and will always remain that way), active (major releases every 6 months (upgrade is automatic, so no worries here)) and very active and friendly community (probably the central hub of it is Ubuntuforums (search on Google, first link).

You need to get used to that tone in his case...

I suppose you never headr about NT 3.51, NT 4.0, 2000, 2003... (also, I'm curious how will you explain that my Windows 2003 installation, year old (computer basically always on) still awaits its maiden crash...)
BTW, Windows XP 64 Bit is better than XP...but it has nothing to do with it's "64 bitness". Plain and simple, XP is NT 5.1 version of NT/Windows, and XP 64bit...isn't. It's 5.2, the same as Windows 2003. So basically XP 64bit is 2003 discuised as mainstream XP.
| dauodwa wrote: | | I hate nt. I prefer XP. |
You do realise that XP is NT (5.1/5.2(64bit), to be precise), don't you?
Oh, excuse me, I forgot that you have ID view on the idea of "fact"... |

I've mainly been using GNU/Linux over the last 2.5 years. I dual boot with Windows XP, though, for gaming purposes _________________ I guess some things are in order... |

Ok, simplifying:
- don't try Linux on computer you have now. Modern Linux distribution requires computer as powerfull as for Windows XP/Vista
- suggestion: try Linux yourself on your new machine. You can only know if it's good for you if you try yourself. If you don't like it, you can still buy Vista later.
- Linux has many distributions, made by different people. These distributions differ. Personally, I think Ubuntu ( www.ubuntu.com ) will be good in your case (for support you can go to www.ubuntuforums.org ) |
