Though I wonder if current users in the uk who have a @gmail address will have to change to @googlemail.com?

No and Google has already said this.

That's not how it works. It's all Gmail; they just have to use the other name in countries where the rights are disputed.
So, if someone sends you an invitation from Googlemail; whether you get a "Gmail" or "Googlemail" address depends on your present location.
(And likewise for the person to whom you send an invitation from Gmail.)

The only way to get around this that I've heard so far, is to use a proxy that is located in an area that has your desired mail name, when you respond to the invitation.

Hold on, what is the difference between @googlemail and @gmail? Why does it matter what the endings are?

It's a matter of whether you like them or not. I prefer GMail because it's shorter, and more original.

In some jurisdictions, the right to use the name "Gmail" is being disputed by other corporations.
In countries like Germany, for example, if you sign up for gmail, you'll get a Googlemail account, which is the same thing, same servers, etc.
Only the name is different, while the matter is still before the courts.

(If you look through the forum, there have been a few threads on the topic.)

Oops, I thought he meant what makes people choose the different endings, not why Google had to change. Reading back I realise I was not clear, and apologise for any inconvience caused (a phrase used at the stations here quite a lot). Smile

I got one before they started using @googlemail thankfully, but unfortunately many other people I Know didn't. How is it that you connect to a proxy server anyway?

Internet Explorer:
1) Find a proxy server IP address and ports that it uses
2) Tools >> Options >> Connections >> LAN Settings >> Select 'Use a proxy server'
3) Enter the details that you found in step 1
4 Click OK, and surf.

Firefox:
1) Find a proxy server IP address and ports that it uses
2) Tools >> Options >> Connection Settings >> Select 'Manual Proxy Configuration'
3) Enter the details that you found in step 1
4 Click OK, and surf.

Thank Andrew!
What are the best proxy servers? Or the ones that you use?

They change regularly. Go to somewhere like www.publicproxyservers.com to find a big list to choose from.

LOL, I don' t see the difference... Send an e-mail to an an address with @googlemail.com, send another to the same just with @gmail.com, the same person will receive it... It doesn' t make a difference if you send it to @gmail.com or @googlemail.com, or did you mean something else???
