Competing? In what areas are Google and AOL in competition? _________________

I suppose on one side we have a Google Talk-AIM-ICQ alliance, and the other side a MSNM-Y!IM coalition?
This is getting interesting... _________________ Hello? Is this microphone on? Testing testing one two three...

It certainly makes 'omnibus' programs like Trillian more attractive than ever.
I just 'turn it on', and everything, (including IRC) is connected.
I have to admit, though. The idea of someone on AOL being able to IM me is still a little disconcerting. I'm still not sure those people should be allowed out in public without supervision. _________________

With Google paying one billion for a 5% share of AOL, it makes good sense. There are 50 million AIM (AOL) users currently. Hiring Sean Egan a lead developer of Gaim is smart, too. The new Google Talk Voice features are included in the beta 2.0 of Gaim and it can be found here. _________________

This is great news I currently use Trillian because I have AIM, MSN and Yahoo messengers. Is there any word of also supporting MSN and Yahoo? _________________ We are going to have to act if we want to live in a different world

Highly doubt it since Microsoft is a competitor to Google and MSN and Yahoo have teamed up.

| i think google talk doesn't have a very bright future right now since we are talking about competitors like ICQ, MS and Yahoo (who have been in the industry for years). But if google decide to keep investing and add innovative features like the chat function they have on Gmail, I am sure they will catch up eventually (tho it might take long). |

Of course forgetting for a moment that one can already use GTalk client to talk to AOL/ICQ/Yahoo/MSN friends by utilising Jabber transports/gateways.

You forgot to mention that it hardly works and messages usually get lost (atleast for me they do).

Your experience hardly proves anything, at most that you're using badly maintained transports/have it improperly configured. For me it works perfectly. OTOH I have no problem with acces to high quality transports - Jabber is strong in my country for a looong time.
