Why one or the other? Many people have 3, 4, or more IM programs.
What do the people you know use?
And what do you have to lose by trying it, yourself?

Personally, the thought of using three of four IM's seems insane, I use Trillian Pro personally. It works with all major IM's, including Google Talk.
It also has loads of features that Google Talk, and even other IM's have failed to provide.

What I like too is the fact that these additional features are available as add-ons. They are not part of the basic program; meaning that a user is not saddled with excess baggage he/she does not want.

Personally, I believe that people that are addicted to IMing are insane. But there they are, and many using different clients.
Some people enjoy using the different 'flavours' for the sake of variety. Some have their favourites, and will use another only begrudgingly, when forced to, in order to chat with someone specifically using another.

I myself, also use Trillian Pro. Very rarely, as I've yet to be convinced that email is too slow a form of communication.
If and when they incorporate the Jabber protocol into the free version, they'll have a lot more converts.

Yes, Jabber is only available in the full version of Trillian Pro, not the free version. However, considering the wealth of features at your finger tips in the full version, paying twenty five dollars is ridiculously cheap. At least it is in my opinion. You also get a full year's worth of updates and the access to full technical support.

It works for me!

I have not seen any that I thought were worth while. Perhaps you would be so kind as to list a few, so that I might inspect them for myself.

Look mainly at Miranda, GAIM and Psi (I assume you want only something for Windows...)

I had MSN on my comp but then I was told that it takes up LOADS of space so (seeing as I wasn't using it much) I uninstalled it. Is this true? and does Google Talk take up a lot of space on your computer?
Actually, is Gtalk like MSN messenger...like you can talk live to other Google friends?

I can't teally make a detailed comparison, since I use Trillian Pro. Which uses the various services, without the need to have the actual client installed.

However, I would assume that Gtalk would be preferable to MSN if you were concerned about system resources.
One of the things that people often mention as an advantage, is that it is a 'leaner' program, without a lot of the unecessary (and often unwanted) bloat of Messenger;
that still allows a very nice, clear voice connection for live conversation (as well as the usual text messages).

I can't stand Trillian. It's a bigger resource whore than MSNM. I personally use Gaim, on both my Windows and Linux PCs. Like Trillian, Gaim can use Jabber, MSN, Gtalk, IRC and Yahoo! protocals. Version 2.00 of Gaim should have been released last month.

I prefer Google Talk, but I have to use MSN Messenger because others use it. My biggest gripe about the service is that you can impersonate others by using "Unverified" email addresses.
