If your PM box gets full (mine was nearing 4,000 messages), you may wish to download all your Private Messages to your computer for safekeeping or searching.

Look for these links--

Download all Private Messages as:
XML | CSV | Text

After downloading them, I suggest emptying all of your PM boxes, including the Inbox and Sent box.
