Interesting question: "what would happen if I leave them out?" - I will get one angry visitor!
"Does it bother me?" - Well, yes, maybe that visitor is one small kid from a poor country who's probably already got used to see ugly pictures on his browser, but making his life more miserable (as working on i286/386pc) does not make me a good designer then.
