Google bought Youtube for $1.65 billion. That's serious coin right there.
Whereas Google could have bought Metacafe or any other video site instead for a lot less. Touch it up a little, modeling after Youtube's design and feel if you will. Then make the announcement. Viola! users flock to it. Whatever Google touches turns into gold anyway. There you go.
So why buy an expensive site when it is not even a direct competition?
If Google is buying Yahoo, then I can see the rationale.
