You just need to wait. By default GDS Mac will display both desktop counts and web counts when you do a search through the quick search box. When you have desktop results it will automajically display those for you. If you aren't seeing any results for items that you know you have on your computer you haven't waited long enough for GDS Mac to finish it's initial index, which can take some time.

EDIT: Oh yeah, also, you need to change the preference so that it searches your desktop instead of the web.
