I agree with you on the second point, there should be a choice for the user. Altho I will still have it all switched on myself.

I'm not so sure of the first one. I think people will start adding weird/annoying images again. I really like to send and receive clean e-mails. If you would really like to include HTML in this, I'd recommend to choose for the POP3 solution that Gmail offers. Nearly any e-mail client relying on POP3, supports HTML messages.
