Are you sure you don't really have any new mail? GTalk usually shows the New Mail sign when you do have new mail.
I've never heard of its checking system being wrong before. Maybe you checked another email address or something.
If that doesn't answer your question, right-click on the GTalk icon on the system tray and click on Check Mail Now.
If you really don't have any new mail, GTalk should rectify its error.
Other than that, I'm baffled. You might try re-installing GTalk if nothing works.
