They all link to different parts of the NY Times site for example "World" will link to world news and "Technology" links to Technology news. I hope this helped rmccueSPAN class=nameB /B[/color]

Apparently, these types of 'extra' links are available to Google AdWords Search Partners,
one of which is the NY Times.

@mondine, no, that's incorrect. I have a website which has those links too. Be sure to distinguish the most important parts of your website clearly, like nytimes.com does, I guess. Care about SEO, be Google friendly, have many backlinks, so Google thinks your site is important. Might also take a while, mind you. (and try searching for some "normal" websites on Google, you'll see those links quite often!: for example, if the website is megagames.com, then search for "megagames".)

Laurent, you may have had a site, like many, that had a high listing, and sub-listed links.

It is most certainly not the same deal you see here.
These are the result of an advertising partnership.

Again, NY Times is one of those partners. Clicking through those links
also serves up ads from other Google AdWords Search Partners.

You can have backlinks up the wazoo, and SEO until the cows come home,
but unless you have a similar partnership deal; you won't have the kinds of links referred to here.

Alright, enough doom and gloom for a bit. Let me do a couple posts about user interfaces (UI). Everyone who thinks that search engines are completely perfect and can never be improved, please raise your hand. Anyone? Anyone? Bueller? Okay, good. We all agree that it’s important for search engines to keep trying fresh ideas. Here’s one UI test that’s pretty cool:

Can you see what’s going on? For a small number of sites, we’re not just showing our regular snippets: we try to expose useful links from within a site. In this Berkeley example, Google shows links for Berkeley departments, academics at Berkeley, etc. Pretty neat (and more importantly, useful) stuff.

People who know Google well will go “Cool” and move on. Other folks will ask things like “Are sites or their links selected by hand–can my site get in on this? Is money involved?” And the answer is: it’s all algorithmic. The algorithms pick the sites where this could be helpful. Of course money isn’t involved at all.
