Are Meta tags extinct?

Is this true that Google alongwith most major search engines
today, ignore META tags?? So is the era of filling up keywords in a
META tag are over?

That is pretty much true, it's more of a case of making sure your not keyword stuffing as you might get penalized now. Yahoo still value's the description and keyword meta tags but not to the same extent anymore. Google doesn't rank them at all.

The meta tags are still used - it's just that they do not have the weight they once used to.

Do use meta tags as they are used by some search engines. I have seen google using keyword/description meta tags to select ads for adsense.

Not only for google adsense. If you search for a site by its URL the result of the site will be the Meta-tag description.

Meta tags ARE NOT dead or extinct. But you have to kepp some simple rules:

1. Keywords to page content relevancy which means not to use keywords that do not exist in the page words.

2. Description to page content relevancy which means not to use description words that do not exist in the page words.

3. Title to page content relevancywhich means not to use in the title words that do not exist in the page words.

There are many meta tag analyzers.

Use of robots meta tag is essential to direct robots behaviour. Image that you dont want your site pages crawled every day. How can you tell the spider how often to visit them? Don't answer .

So, Meta Tags are not extinct, they are essential.

Keywords in Meta Tags should not be prioritized for SEO. You can use meta keywords in spare time and keep them very relevant to the page content as right use of Meta keywords does not harm. Top search engines like Google don't give importance to Meta Keywords anymore, they just use content on your site instead to rank it. But Meta Keywords are still used by smaller search engines, so it's better to use them that not at all.
