Article recognition in search engines.

I dont know how to put this, as just realised what is happening.

I began numbering my articles because linking to the title is too long.On advice I went back and changed some to titles.but not on all of them. This meant that in search engine llistings I got both the heading twice. That was ok no big deal.

I was searching for more keyword to feed into IBP Alexa to get my search engine positions and I looked up an article with a good keyword heading.

The article I chose came from my site as url was www.articleauthor14 A14 is my link.

Now i am not concerned about the link going directly to author's site, but how do get recognition for this article if someone uses a search term and come up with it as I did.
Is this the way article links work.? Naturally the authors link to the article is showing and if am an affiliate of the author's then I add my affiliate id.

I guess this is the reason why artcles build up traffic - true? [b]Yahoolta vista stats timed out - returning nil results/[b]

i have never bothered to check this out before as they always show up in my search engine listings.
Will I get the cookie if someone finds this article?
Can someone explain this please?
