Cheating by new MSN beta search engine

Are you too cheated?? not yet??

When you do a query at MSN. First initially you will be shown a number of results. When you go to end page of the results .. then you can observe that the results not as many as claimed initally.

The following observation is with the setting that for page 10 results.

Details:

"malapati raja sekhar" query resulted: 116 results ..

but there is no 9th, 10th, 11th, 12th pages at all.
So I went on 8th page (70+ results) : it showed that there were only 76 results. Again I went to 1st page (in fact any other page less than .. it is showing again 116 pages.

clearly this is a cheating ..

You too experienced??

Raja

I just tested it, and you're right!
Silly them! They need to do some serious testing and adjusting!

I think there should be a law against that because it is like false advertising and i think MSN sucks.

Well, it does state beta, so you can expect some flaws (sp?), therefor it's not false advertising, it's just a small bug. Even if there was a law against it, it wouldn't be of any use, since MSN can simply state it's a bug they're working on.

Not sure if you noticed, but this also happens with the Google search engine Perhaps it's just a bug in the way search engines are commonly programmed in?

It's not really a bug - it's expected behavior, which is why Google says "about" x pages and you should use more specific keyword requests.

It's expected behavior? That seems so odd. Would it really be that difficult (or maybe even impossible) to program it in a way that the amount of pages is right?

They've updated it to make it more friendly and reasonable, but just try this.

Type in something like "car"

I did it just now. You can't go past page 92, which is only 911 results out of "about 439,000,000"

tokkolo: Yes, I would imagine it would be very difficult to return all 439 million (for example) results. When you want to get results to 200+ million queries per day in ~1 second time each, you probably run into a few limitations.
