why should index page also lose rank when the rest of site changes?

as i came to know from all of you that making a drastic change will result in such cases, i.e. losing page rank, i have a doubt that no matter how much change we make, the index of the site remains the same(i.e. link and all thou the content changes and i believe changing content slightly doesnt matter much). so, shouldnt the index page rank same as before in search engines???

Change of targeted keywords? designs? what changes..?

I believe that page rank can't be measured by being indexed only.. page rank can rank high, or shall stay if you gather related links from your site regularly...

If you've changed your targeted keywords,, that can be one factor...

before you optimize on or off page,, you must think of your final targeted keywords and audiences.. what are your final services,, then after that,, you can go on the optimization...

well post on this thread again if you have more questions,, im sure many friends here in our community will help you..

I can see why Kurt don't understand tenzin's question.
Tenzin has changed entire web site, so now he's going to loose PR for those pages that has changed location. He's question in simple words: "my all pages, that moved to new location, will loose PR, why home page does not loose it?"

I think PR is calculated as SUM OF Total Links referring to your DOMAIN NAME, i.e. "www.yoursite.com" in first place. If referring link points to some specific url, then that page will get some PR points and add it to your web site PR.

I had a good link in my bookmarks, but thanks again to XP, I had to reinstall my PC and as always forget something to backup....shit happens....

Sorry to hear about the XP trouble...

I guess that means one less Christmas card for Mr. Bill this year.

no, i mean no change of keywords or targetted words or anything like that. but drastic change of design. thou the content is almost the same as old one. the new pages were created to replace the old ones, i.e. like we do when creating new pages for new sites. so, the file name also have changed(for eg. if it was 'tour to annapurna', then it has become 'annapurna tour'). the reason for this was we didnt know that it would result in loss of previous rank. and my question was after all this, the index page will always remain index(the name). so, why should it also lose rank..but i guess i got the answer from you and alex. cos the rank a site gets is the combination of all pages..
