Does google check content or the design also of the sites?

hi everyone!!!
our client has a site with two domain names. both the domains have exactly the same content. yeah, ok, its ok if u call us spammers.
so, with the recent dropping of our site i have found that the duplicate site is much ahead of the original site(which is being submitted to directories and all). infact, the original site comes in omitted results only. and, just now, i read somewhere that, google has been doing this, ie placing the duplicate content first, that too with very low rankings in SERP. so, what should i do here? change the duplicate site. but is changine only the content enough? or should i change the design also? or should i change design only(must not be)?

Hey tenzin,
Design and colors could stay the same, but changing text and meta tags is important, so they would seem as two different web sites, each having it's own group of targeted users. This way google easily diverts traffic to one or another site according to closest search match.

Regards,

Thank you for asking questions, this way I learn with you.

If you want to know how Google bot "see" your page, just search for "google bot simulator" and test your page in that program, all you will see is pure text and html. I just quickly found one here: View a Web Page as 'Googlebot'
Enjoy,

Hmm, that may be a flaw in their web program, maybe try another simulator.
Luck,

Google checks even the code of each page, that is why webmasters say you use css or tabled (for better results use divs) for coding. Designs are just nothing because google spiders the content, not the images.

Images I think will be crawled if there is/are also text but usually bots crawled text in your content.

Yes, but only the alt tags within the images, not the image design itself.
