Why did Google buy Youtube and not Metacafe?

Google bought Youtube for $1.65 billion. That's serious coin right there.

Whereas Google could have bought Metacafe or any other video site instead for a lot less. Touch it up a little, modeling after Youtube's design and feel if you will. Then make the announcement. Viola! users flock to it. Whatever Google touches turns into gold anyway. There you go.

So why buy an expensive site when it is not even a direct competition?
If Google is buying Yahoo, then I can see the rationale.

if you are going to buy a certain product which one do you want, a branded product and known by a certain community or a local branded product known by 2-3 people only?

The single most important question about Google is that will it be able to survive after the awful acquisition of Yahoo inc. by Microsoft corporation.
