Google to add audio and video search

Quote:
Google, currently in a quiet period in the run-up to its much-anticipated public stock offering, is likely to make quite a bit of noise by adding audio and video clips to its search services, according to a published report.

Company founders Sergey Brin and Larry Page "made no secret" of plans to add multimedia while attending the annual Allen & Co.-sponsored retreat for media executives in Sun Valley, Idaho, last week, the New York Post reported. A spokeswoman for Mountain View, Calif.-based Google could not confirm the plan, the paper reported.

Immediate speculation raised the idea Google would go beyond radio and TV clips and enter the online music business, selling downloads of music files. "You can't ignore it. There is tons of money to be made off of music," Danny Sullivan, editor of searchenginewatch.com, told the Post.

Audio and video search is already available through Yahoo's (YHOO) AltaVista and America Online's (TWX) Singingfish.com.

I agree, Google will probably expand to the music industry.

People are starting to hate Google for the same reason they hate Microsoft. They think it has gotten too big and is becoming too controlling over the internet. But hey, who would they rather be controlled by: them, or the evil Gator?

search and email are only a portion of the internet. There are various other ways of presence. hence if you mean real control or directions then it will not be possible.
Now we are in the nascent stage of e commerce. The internet offers a possibility of reducing the time and distance. But there are issues to be resolved. security, identifiction etc. Once any entity attains the critical mass, this service will not be of much use.
With connectivity becoming better, you may start imagining VPNs and other wired connections. Security is an important factor. Those who have gainful information, will not like to lose and may even switch over to others forms of connectivity than internet.
Hence i opine that even though at this stage google is the leader in providing informtion, information alone will not be sufficient.

I feel that information will be sufficient if they can provide it correctly and well enough.

However, they can't do it that well; they're only human. That's why they've started going towards other things.

I personally wish there was a better way than to use a credit card over the internet; while many websites use the same amount of encription as the US Army, people have hacked NASA. Sadly I don't know of any good way to transfer funds to poeple in such places as Florida and Texas.

I believe google is beginning to catch on to what they have need to catch on to for so long. By them expanding into the audio and video indistry they will open themselfs to alot more opportunities. microsoft is hated due to their restrictions, crappy software, and an egotistical ass of a founder. Google may become hated by some but who knows..

If the a/v searching ends up being used for illegal stuff though they'll get into such trouble so I can understand why there taking there time over it. Best that things are right first time.
