Google buys Dodgeball

Quote:
Is a new and free mobile phone-based service that enables its subscribers to find friends within a 10-block area. A user sends a text message with his or her location to Dodgeball, and the server relays the message to the user's selected list of friends. It also notifies the user of any friends, or friends-of-friends, who are within the 10-block range.

That's pretty cool... and interesting! I'd like to see what comes of it, though. It doesn't seem like it would be too useful to anybody I know.

darren: I seem to be thinking the same thing. I think what is in our head is when a mobile phone provider that was offering a controversial service which pinpointed the location of all of your friends, which was considered by some to be a violation of the user's privacy.

Do you know why Google is buying it? I think it's because to get more users. The big companies like Microsoft and Yahoo have a lot of users with their account stuff, but Google doesn't really have that with a search engine. That's why Google wants to have more users, and maybe that's why Gmail was created, Google Groups, and probably also Dodgeball, to have again more users. I know Google has already many users with Google Adsense and stuff, but those are bussiness related users, and Google wants users like you and me, so that probably explains why they bought it.

I want be using it, most of the time a '10 block area' of my friends would consist of a bunch cows and horses. It would be nice if they could talk though.:P It's pretty neat for folks that live in New York/LA or other populated areas.
