Google slowly droping links

Hi,
I have an online travel directory. I have 8,000 items in the site. I also have cross links in from content items to forum items. WHen Google first got hold of my site I had 78,000 links registered in google.

Over the last few weeks Google is slowly droping links, I am currently at 10,300. I used to get very high rankings and new content would be listed in 36 hours.

Does anyone know what has happened or is happening. I have done the sitemap thing. I have deleted the sitemap today , so as to let it spider naturally.

My searches are slowly slipping as well. What used to come up as number 1 is now number 4.

Any Ideas

Regards
Glenn

I think google is now updating backlinks, but I'm not sure. I know backlinks update is after the PR update.

Surely, some updates are going on Google. There are much fluctuations on External links in GWT.

I don't think dropping your sitemap was a good idea though. It helps in quickening the crawling since all your pages are listed there.

Hi all, Thanks for the advice. I have put it back asap. Only dropped for a day. Notified Google- it has picked it up again.

Does anyone know a good, quick sitemap generator.

I use Gsitecrawler - slow and put heavy burden on my site while crawling.
I have over 8000 content items and another 8000 forum threads.
It can take a week to crawl the site- slows down the site as well.

Regards
Glenn

The sitemap is definitely important. Try to monitor the development over the next weeks to see if this improves the number of sites listed in google again.
