Well, depends what you mean as in the best. In terms of Images I believe Yahoo wins. Both companies have their downsides and ups.

Well, Yahoo! might be the winer if you considered only images. But I believe that if you look at Yahoo! and Google with all that they have to offer, I'd say that Google is the winner. And anyway, that's what was kept in mind when making this site (Google Community) - Google is the best. So I think everyone here follows that philosophy.

google is in fact the winner for best search. i forsee yahoo taking over as most popular pretty soon though. not because they are better mind you, but because they are really turning up the portal mentality. they already have plenty of users who use them simply because "hey, im here checking my email, might as well just search here".

now with yahoo huge push into entertainment (some of their recent hires have been big wig hollywood types) they are really gunning to be a one stop shop for all your web needs, even more than before. i think this is why G has been making a huge push for logged n eyeballs (gmail, personalized search, gtalk) and they have even dipped their foot into entertainment with the recent premier of the Chris Rock show being shown exclusively on Google Video.

google became the most popular because they were the best at what they did, unfortunalty that might not be enough anymore. i still think they are the best AND the smartest though.

Yes, you're definitely right, letitbe. Google is definitely the smartest and best, as compared to Yahoo! or even MSN. The others (like the two I've mentioned) are not really up to the mark. Google is really amazing.

A lot of what Yahoo has on their page is just a simplified and streamlined version of elements that they've had for years. It just reflects changing taste in design.

Don't forget that there was much opportunity to make the same accusations of Google, when they came along as the 'new guys'.

Yes, you're right, mondine. There must have been enough room for accusing Google of copying (or something else) another company (like Yahoo!). But now that Google is the leader and Yahoo! is following (at least that's what I think), there is "enough room for accusing" Yahoo!.
The thing is, whatever Yahoo! do will be countered by Google or their fans (and I am one of them). And whatever Google do might be countered by Yahoo! or their fans (I'm not so sure about this one). For example, now that Yahoo! and Google have virtually the same page format at this page, some people might accuse Yahoo! while some people might accuse Google.

P.S. I hope you understood what I said.

Well, appearance really isn't all that important.
It's like designing a car. They have basically the same components, and are wind-tunnel tested to all have a similar aerodynamic shape.

It's the extra features, innovation and power, that really makes the difference. The things that aren't always apparent, and everyone has their own idea of what is the perfect set of 'optional equipment'.

But the best thing is a healthy competition that keeps these companies, and others, constantly trying to improve their products and services; so that everybody benefits, no matter what they choose to use.

Yes, you're right again, mondine, but there is one problem - nothing you say will stop the debate. People will go on and on about the appearance, unless someone drills some sense into them.
But yeah, coming back to what you said, it is the fact that "they are constantly trying to improve their products and services so that everyone benefits" that is really the best thing, and that is keeping up the "healthy competition" (and rivalry) that Google and Yahoo! have.

u all are talking for competitions ....i belive google will always be tehre at the 3rd position where it is since years ago...

but here till now yahoo was and is at the top position in worldwide web rankings... and u dont believe google to copy things then what is gmail and google talk are they not copied ones...

just dont try to convience any one rather try yourself conviencing...okkkk
