Domain change/redirects
A hypothetical question for now!!
If I was to change the domain name for a site, would a 301 permanent redirect be google (and other se) friendly, from the old domain to the new domain. I`m thinking more in way of my backlinks. Should I contact my backlinks, and ask them to update the url/domain or would the 301 redirect `take care` of that with google bots in mind? I have a lot of backlinks, and was hoping I could do it the lazy way!! Did that make sense? |

Yes. The 301 redirect will redirect most search engine traffic (make sure subdirectories and files are redirected, too). As long as this redirect remains in place, the links should work too. But it would be better to have all of the old links updated.
The best thing to do, of course, would be to keep the site where it is - as changing domains rarely improves a site's rankings. |
