Very Strange - Ideas?

Google has been doing strange things with my site placement of late. I've posted recently that after several years at the number 1 postion for my perfered keywords, I was knocked right out of the index for a few days; going from 1 to 4 on the first page, then to the middle of page 4 and then gone. After several days my site was back but at the number 9 position of the first page...where it's currently staying. Google always used my meta content description to describe my web site (as the other sites above mine still are described by Google) but now my description on Google has been changed and is made up with a paragraph of words which although similar to a certain string of words on my site - is not an exact match. Any ideas why my meta content description is being ignored? It's properly formated and tagged..same as it always was and also, how is it possible that Google picked up a string of words for the description that don't exist anywhere in my site exactly as they have it (including in the alt comments)?
