More links to your site

Am I right in thinking that the more links you have to your site on other websites (is that what is known as 'backlinks'?) gives you a better ranking (among other things) on google?

If so, then does anyone want to swap links?

C.

So, if someone has a new website (like me) with little or no PageRank, then it is unlikely that anyone would want to swap links anyway?

This thing about page rank is a bit of a fallacy. PR indicates the importance of your site in relation to visitors and content. It has no bearing at all on your positioning on any SE. Use it as a pure guideline.
Quality IBL's and outgoing links coupled with content and constant updating is the answer - Google also only stores your BL's for a limited time and never shows your full number of links. The best way to see the number of Google links that your site enjoys is to do this in a Google Search Box "mysite" So mine for example is "counciltenanantsmortgages" no www or .co.uk is required.

it would be more benecifial for you if you link to websites that use the same keywords you have on yours. for example, if you deal with loans, get links from any loan company. It snot just about linking to as many sites..but the quality and relevancy of the sites.

some would argue, why would i want to link to the compettition. its true..sometimes there is no point. try and find other sites in countries you do not target.

Yes I agree, I have links with US Real Estate Directories and I don't transact business in the USA - I don't link to my UK competitors, there's no point - they would never link back to us in a million years. We are too ethical! LOL

Keep in mind that you don't want to just go out there and spam link exchanges with everyone and anyone. Keep to your target market or at least close to it!

As mentioned earlier, PR isn't really that important. The only use I have for it is link exchanging or selling ads. For some reason, a lot of people put stock in it so it has some form of value as a trade item but it doesn't really do much else. For example, my web dev company's website is PR5 and it has about 10 outbounds and no inbounds and the content hasn't changed in years.

Threedollars - that is the last thing to do, buying links may seem like a short cut to riches, it is not - Matt Cutts recently went on stage with a simple lap top and asked the delegates for random URL's - within minutes he could name - recips - purchased - and natural BL's - Google ignore and even penalise bought links. PM me, and I'll tell you how to do it.
