Will SEO Die?

Hey Folks,

Someone listening to my podcast mentioned that Bruce Clay said Optimization would Die? I do not know how tru this is. I feel as long as we control the text on our pages... (which we always will) that we will always be in control. Paid search would never take over the engines bacuase then it wouldn't be relevant.

what are your thoughts?

Optimization of a site will become automatic in the next few years. As CMS systems realize this, they will incorporate seo-friendly standards that will eliminate the need to "optimize" a site.

But, SEM (Search Engine Marketing) will still be a manual process that will continue to be needed as a service.

SEO is more than just optimising the site, it's also about external link building, getting more pages indexed, getting a higher PageRank, removing canonical results or any other errors that have a negative effect on results, using the right domain names and servers for local results etc.

I think that as long as a company is not achieving high results for their targetted keywords there will also be a demand for improvement using SEO.

external link building - that's SEM
getting more pages indexed - SEO
getting a higher PageRank - obtained by getting links to your site - SEM
removing canonical results - SEO
or any other errors that have a negative effect on results - SEO

I'm not trying to start anything here, just trying to popint out that a lot of the SEO side of things can be automated, and then the focus can be on SEM.

I see what you mean. I was classing everything as SEO, but yes it does seem that in the future search engine marketing will become more necessary than SEO.

automatic optimization? that will still be based on what is on the site. Whats the difference. That sounds far fetched to me.

"That sounds far fetched to me." - I am already doing this for my own sites, I can pre-populate meta tags with whatever information I desire, or capture the content dynamically.

Whenever a page is created, I make sure it creates hyphenated file names, and I can even ensure that I can drop some stylization into the code itself.

To see an example, check out my blog page (http://seoblog.seoforgoogle.com/)- the homepage is actually an rss feed that calls out the title and link. Each blog that gets created is already optimized when I generate it.

It's a pretty simple system, the key is knowing what needs to be automatic and what needs to be manually added each time -

By the way, mr-seo, I really like your podcast page, I will be listening over the weekend!

That just Makes it easier to post content. it is a content management system. It allows to you to add content not optimize it. The content still needs to be optimized.

Thanks for the comment on the podcast. Just uploaded a new one. better quality and a good topic. Little humor here and there.

That still doesn't tell me SEO is dead. IT doesn't place the keywords in the right places and the right percentage for the search engines, add meta tags, to keyword research or write optimized content. Adding more pages means nothing if they are not optimized.

All this tells me is that add pages will be automated. Which is probably already the easiest part of SEO.
