something my dad said at dinner that made my skin crawl
well dear ol' dad, after watching a news show on identity theft, drops the following bomb on me..........
....." well Orpheus, you know what i'd like to see is a fingerprint pad integrated into atm's, that way if you fingerprint AND your pin code dont match, no cash for you and an alert sent to local police.., how does that sound? " as my fork hit the plate ( my entire body temp dropped about 20 degrees making it impossible to manipulate silverware ), all attention focused on me. now these little family gatherings are an exercise in bomb dropping, comments designed to inflame, flame, or hurt are commonplace, and it is not unusual to see my sister and mother cry in a alternating on/off rotation. it is also not unusual to witness a contest between my father and i where the rules are quite simple, you win if you are loudest...........unless he pulls the dad card out and trumps your a$$, no matter how wrong he always is. taking several deep breaths before answering, i fumbled for the quickest way to draw blood......... i asked, well, "how did the woman lose her identity?" this was an obvious ploy to gain some time before he either attacked my silence, or crowed that his plan was great and why wasnt american express returning his calls. he replied, "....she had her pin number written down on her social security card.." A-HA , Victory was around the corner for me without having to sound so paranoid as i usually do regarding online and financial anonymity. i replied, " dad, if you are the kind of dumba$$ who has his pin # on his social security card, and carry both of them with you, then no atm machine yet designed nor conceived can help you. next, you're gunna tell me your PIN # is your b-day " ( it was ) silence riegned around the table for a few minutes, indicating a sure victory for the good guys. my victories are few and short however, bcz its only a matter of minutes before he starts with " remember when you did that.........." i swear, the man has a special ability to re-live past anger like it just happened. im surprised i didnt get grounded ( i dont live with my parents, but i bet he would try it ) im still kinda chilly just thinking about having to have my finger prints taken to access my cash. perhaps for the retarded individuals amung us, such as my father, this would be okay on a voluntary basis, but i swear i would put cash under my mattress if my bank asked me to take prints. |

Well stuck_fugu, the problem I, and probably many other people have with ATMs taking your fingerprint is the issue of privacy. If the ATM records your fingerprint, and it has a line to the police, it could possibly be recorded. This would be a huge infringement on privacy rights. I'm against it. I do see a need for better security in ATMs, but this is not the way.
