Is anyone here an EXPERT with partitioning hard drives?

I am in need of desperate help. Please listen to my story. I bough a new laptop, and for some reason, it came partitioned, with a C Drive which is 20GB, and a D Drive which is 40GB. And I'm assuming it came "pre-partitioned" because I don't think my laptop has two hard drives...

Anyway, I want to make both of these into one, can someone please help me with this? I'm really a computer noob and I really don't want to

mess up my computer or anything. Oh yeah, I do have Partition Magic, but I just don't have any idea how to use it, and like I said, I don't want to ruin my computer. Also, I forgot to mention that the D Drive is completely empty except for 2 folders which came with the computer. Everything else is on my C Drive which is annoying, because I'm almost at 50%. Even if you can save files to either drives, I just want one (C) because it makes my computer illiterate life simple and convenient.

So anyway, if anyone really knows what they're doing when it comes to partitioning hard drives, please let me know. It will probably be easier to talk about it on AIM? Please let me know, and thanks a lot to anyone that replies.

Yes. #1: Backup your hard drive -- everything -- so you can always go back no matter what happens.

Partitioning is never 100% reliable, although it is relatively safe. Consider, though - what if the power goes out? the processor burns out? the cables become loose?

All of these things would mess up your data while repartitioning.

Secondly, use Partition Magic. I have done exactly what you have described before, with no data loss. It is very easy to do. The exact steps vary depending on your version of PMagic. Read the help files/documentation, then go ahead and do it -- after you've made your backups.

I've used Partition Magic and I agree that's a good way to do what you want to do. Nice tool and very easy to use, as well as quite safe.

Nice idea to backup all your valuable data before using Partition Magic; I never had a loss of data, but one never ones

There's another tool from the same company called Drive Image which is also an excellent one combined with Partition Magic. You can backup a whole drive and restore it easily.

One last thing: don't forget to create the rescue disks the program proposes you to do.

Yeah... Um what exactly are those rescue disks and what do they do? Is that different from backing up my hard drive? If so, how? Can someone please explain?

Thanks in advance.

BTW, I was thinking of getting an external hard drive to backup all my data.

I just picked up an external hard drive today... Is it necessary to create those rescue disks and use that tool you mentioned AS WELL as backing up my hard drive? Or can I just back up my hard drive...

A rescue disk is exactly what it says: something that helps you in case of problems.

Do you know what Windows rescue disks are for? In this case it's something similar. Partition Magic's rescue disks are very useful: number one is more or less a Windows rescue disk, and number two let's you start the program from a DOS-like environment.
I have never used them (fingers crossed), but I have them.

Maybe they are not necessary, but I think they can be absolutely useful.

i think that this post will go on even if Grox solves his problem. Grox, keep us informed as and when your problem is solved.
