Fixed Disk Parameter Table or BIOS Error

Okay, so I was browsing around the web the other day. My notebook completely locked up, and I had to hold in the power button for 10 seconds to do a hard shut down. A few hours later, I go to turn it on and I get this message after seeing the Compaq logo for about 5 minutes, along with three loud beeps.

Fixed Disk Parameter Table or BIOS Error
    System Halted
So, I pop in my Windows XP Installation CD, trying to reinstall Windows, and I get the same thing, Compaq logo, Three beeps, then the error message.

So next I pop in Knoppix STD. Same thing, I can't do anything at all with my system. Anybody know what is going on and how I can fix it? Thanks!

Maybe you've got problems in your Hard Disk, but I would like to know one thing: when you say that you start the Knoppix distro, does it fail after it starts or before? Because if it fails before, I think your Hard Disk may have died...

Well, I've asked a friend of mine and he has given me two interesting links:

This one shows that you're not the only one with that kind of problem:

    Code:
    http://www.mcse.ms/archive49-2004-7-516055.html

And in this one there's a firmware upgrade to solve a problem like that:

    Code:
    http://h18000.www1.hp.com/support/files/Notebooks/nl/download/10562.html

    I hope it helps...

I downloaded it, copied it to a Floppy, put it into my notebook, booted it up, and got the same error, followed by three beeps.

had the same problem on my laptop a hp pavilion, I removed the harddisk and could boot again (knoppix live cd w/o harddisk).... so you might be able to boot the system by removing the harddisk and updating the firmware , although in my case it looks like the harddisk is fucked.

    hope it helps

Freeze, please do not bring back old topics from now on and please refrain from using swear words. Apologies for the rude language.
    Edit: Reworded the post.

Eric: Remember. It's always better to reply to an old topic that to start a new one. Let's be a little more welcoming to newcomers, this topic is afterall one of the largest sources of googlers, according to intelliot.

freeze: I had to take it to the local computer shop and have my hard drive replaced. Good luck, hopefully you can find a less expensive solution.

I have just found this forum, it came up in a search for the same problem, "Fixed Disk Parameter or Bios Error", on my Compaq M700.

The problem cannot be the HDD because that was the first thing I purchased (was thinking of upsizing anyway) after I installed and setup XP Pro it lasted about 30 mins before doing the same all over again.

I tried removing the onboard internal memory battery, after re-inserting and only hooking up AC power it booted up (I had to pressed F1 at initial search) and continued on to windows, seemed fine.

Then 10 mins later I was getting BLUE screens.

First one said "KERNAL-DATA-INPAGE-ERROR next try it came up with "KERNAL-STACK-INPAGE-ERROR"

This must be a problem with Compaq machines, cause I have an N610C and mine has done exactly the same. I've not found a solution yet, but if I do, I'll let you know what it is.

Sorry for resurrecting an old post
