What's google's next big move?
Google's next big move?
Is it Google's Operating System? or Google's Office Suite? or Google Wireless? or Google Online Game? I personally think google's testing of free wireless internet access in silicon valley is a sign of future free wireless service nation-wide (with ads of course!). I also think having its own operating system and office suite is not a technical problem for Google, but rather an issue of whether users want to switch to Google's OS and office suite. Google is going to have a hard time beating MS on this. For gaming system, the internet game is a lucrative zone. what about free online games with ad words on one side? I think Google will take actions on this sooner or later. What's google's next big move? |

I reckon Google's next major move will be the Google operating system (sometimes refered to as GooOS or as Google OS). I think this because Google wants to take Microsoft out of the picture and that will be very hard if Microsoft keeps it place in having the world's most used operating system. Especially with Windows Vista because that is bound to be even more integrated with Microsoft's various web services with the explosive growth and take up of broadband. If Google doesn't make an operating system or get behind an operating system that can compete with Microsoft Windows then they will struggle to push thier software to new levels and really integrate everything with everything else. Also in order to compete with Microsoft Windows, Google's operating system or chosen OS will have to run Windows applications and/or get some major companies porting thier software to it. If GooOS cannot run Microsoft Windows programs without really good alternatives then it will die before it has even properly began, because the main market that it will need to win over is the market containing the less computer literrate and the gamers which will want all of the cool and easy things they could do on windows. It also cannot be as complicated as say Linux because like the above the users wont want to fiddle about with a command-line or have to worry about the X server being screwed up or whatever.

I doubt there will be a Google OS and if there is only you guys will use it. Personally, if it doesn't look nice, I ain't using it. And I highly doubt Google will be paying Microsoft just to get the Windows apps to work on their home made OS.

In my opinion, Google will stick to it's online base. It may roll out some new online service - but never an Operating System. Google makes enough of a profit through it's online businesses to keep everyone of heir employees (and employers) happy, anyway.

In my opinion there will be a Google operating system. First though:

If it doesn't look nice then you won't use it. Well that is quite strange because do you really want to shell out reasonable amounts of money for MS Window Vista? An operating system that is going to require all drivers to be signed, meaning that alot of your older and even pretty new hardware probably will not work. Personally if there isn't a Google OS then I will probably switch to Linux or Apple's MacOSX because it is ridiculess that all or most of my hardware become obsolete not to mention Vista will only run on 64 bit (afaik). Google will not pay MS to make thier apps work, that would be stupid for both companies, MS would lose money if thier programs could work on a possibly cheaper OS, Google wouldn't want to be giving money to the competition. It is far more likely that Google goes for a license for Google OS (if they do choose to make it) that is compatible with whatever one that WINE uses and then beef it up abit with thier own developers, because this will save them time and money making an emulation layer or something like WINE. they will also use MSN Messenger and the MSN toolbar (probably) and then suddenly you have all of these convient services as default and are all that of MS. If Google could do that with an OS (by default) then it would really benefit them. Eventually if they don't have something like that then MS will get ahead in the internet world because everyone will be using thier services as default because they are there and google's are not. Most people aren't techie enough to search out the best they just want the easiest and even if Google's services are equally as easy they wont be default and so are less likely to be used. |
