A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum....

So, as distressingly few people seem to have noticed, I've been off-line for about the past five weeks due to computer problems.

The principle problem with the computer was that it was in a house that burned down.
(I don't know about you, but I find it remarkably annoying when that happens.)

Anyhow, I'm in the process of slapping-together yet another museum-piece of a used computer, and have a great deal of work to do to make it usable.

I've been doing a bit of tidying here already, and will try to get into the forum more in the coming days to get caught up on some work.

But it will take a while, so I'd appreciate it if you could shoot me a PM, if there is anything glaringly dumb that you figure should be dealt with.

Thank you, and carry on.

Unlucky. I hope it wasn't your house.

Did the computer cause the fire?

Not in the sense that I owned it. But it was the one I was renting, and most of the stuff I owned went with it.

How dare you speak ill of the deceased, sir!

Hehe, actually a fair question. No, the old girl was another innocent victim of bad wiring in the attic (the old 'knob and tube' style, for those that are electically inclined).

I'm just glad that one of the few things I had the presence of mind to grab was a handful of disks.
One of them had my password lists, otherwise I would have been truly borked.

Thanks, guys. But I'm afraid the house is no more.
They bulldozed the remains a couple of days ago. Not enough left to fix.

On the plus side, I got a fairly decent new (rental) house only about ten blocks away, so I didn't have to leave my old neighbourhood.

And in better news, I was actually able to access my old, beat-up, smoke-and-water-damaged hard drive on this new (to me ) machine, today.

So, the programs are gone, but there's a ton of files that I never thought I'd see again.

That seriously sucks. Still, glad to know that you're safe and sound Mondine. I guess monetary losses can be compensated or recuperated eventually. Speaking of which, I hope you're financially secure from the insurance?

Well, my insurance agent, 'Fast' Eddie Feldman, has given me an appointment to see him Monday, in the parking lot behind the donut store.

So, I'm real optimistic.

But, oh well. Stuff is just stuff.
You get more stuff.
