You could use a Linux Live CD to access the information stored on the Hard Disk. You could then copy it to any location you want in /mnt/windows/ [where the windows operating system and all files are stored when accessing in Linux].

I believe Andrew has the right idea....Either do something like that or ERD Commander (Emergence Repair Disk) This should be able to bypass the security permissions that are set and allow you to recopy these files so that you don't completely lose them.

no no no,brjust try to get the permission back of the HDD, as long as it can be detected by windows, what you can do is right click the HDD, properties then security tab and acquire the premission and ownership of the HDD with the current user you are log-in.br

Sometimes, for unknown reasons to me, that doesn't work.

This definately won't work because he has completely reinstalled his copy of windows and he didn't set the permissions before the re-install. This means that they are stuck for the SID (Secure ID)that are completely unique to that one user. Therefore he needs to go in outside of a windows environment where that SID is not going to have any meaning and reset the permissions on it in order for him to be able to access it. Normally what you say would work if he was on an administrator account on the same windows installation
